I recieved e-mail from Netgear notifying me of update. Downloaded file and got to looking and my model is R6900. Is this a mistake on their part or does the update apply to the R6900 as well as the R7000?
There is a beta firmware update for the R6900. Please see the Security Advisory

You could buy/borrow a laptop and connect that to the router via ethernet and use that to do the upgrade.

Re: R7000 Firmware upgrade to V1.0.7.6
You can do it via a mobile device on WiFi but if something goes wrong, you'll likely need a computer with Ethernet to get going.
Use the router interface to look for updates directly from the router (Advanced tab, Administration, Router Update, Check) and let it do its thing. As long as nothing goes wrong or changes in your WiFi connection, it should reconnect after the install and reboot. No guarantees...

It's very risky to change a router firmware wirelessly, you can brick it.
As mdgm said, you should use a wired PC (from a friend for example)...

Re: R7000 Firmware upgrade to V1.0.7.6
After installing the v1.0.7.6 firmware as described, my router repeatedly drops and reboots. It did not do this before the firmware upgrade. I re-installed the firmware thinking that it somehow did not complete successfully. I have used both the routerlogin.net web administration and Netgear Genie app to troubleshoot. I attempted the factory reset thinking it might reset to older firmware (it does not). Has anyone else experienced this unacceptable behavior? I thought it was a great router. Who knew a firmware upgrade would turn it into crap?

Re: R7000 Firmware upgrade to V1.0.7.6
Follow-up: For those that might experience the same problem (spontaneous rebooting), I was able to fix it (I hope). I went back and installed the original firmware (1.0.4...). The spontaneous reboot continued to occur. I upgraded each version firmware until I got back to V1.0.7.6. The problem seems to have gone away.

Re: R7000 Firmware upgrade to V1.0.7.6
Same problem after V1.0.7.6_1.1.99 update. Internet super slow on all connected devices and pings/latencies are through the roof. Pings are all over the map as well. from 24ms to 860ms on subsequent tests. What have you done to my beautiful router, Netgear?

Re: R7000 Firmware upgrade to V1.0.7.6
I'm having the same exact issue. This router has been bulletproof since I bought it back in 2013. I've performed a clean install and I'm still losing WAN connectivity.

Re: R7000 Firmware upgrade to V1.0.7.6
Update to my previous post:
I rolled back a few versions back and tried to upgrade one by one all the way up to the 1.0.7.6. drivers. No dice. Still same issue. So I rolled back to the previous 1.0.7.2, and problem went away right away. Netgear, there is something wrong with this version of the firmware. I hope you can see these posts and help us out.

Re: R7000 Firmware upgrade to V1.0.7.6
Just went from 1.0.5.70 > 1.0.7.6_1.1.99. Took about 2 minutes with reboot.
No issues
Both wireless broadcasts stable
All ports running at 1000Mbps
Low ping
Upstream/downstream bandwidth great
