R7000 Slow WiFi Speed

I have the R7000 model that I purchased back in 2014. So it is probably the earliest model. It has been working great with Xfinity up until now. I recently upgraded to fiber at 1gig up/down speed. At the router, hard-wired, I am getting ~950mgb up and down. From the wifi, I can't get any more than 350 down and 300ish up.

I have downgraded to several different firmware versions and am down to V1.0.3.56_1.1.25 (I factory reset after each downgrade)

It gets me a bit better speeds at 400ish down and 350 up. What do I need to do to get similar up/down speeds as the hardwired speeds? I would be happy with even 700-800 down and 700-800 up. It says in the settings it should be up to 1300mgb.

Any ideas? Do I just need a new router? I would like to keep this one since it hasn't died yet, or maybe it has. I just don't understand why the wifi is so much slower than the hard-wire speed.

Thanks in advance for you ideas.

Re: R7000 Slow WiFi Speed

Those are the speeds you can expect over wireless from that devices. It wasn't until the R7800 (with proper matching equipment) that gigabit wireless speeds were hit on wireless AC. Emphesis on proper matching equipment. That means either running 160hz wide channels or 4x4 antenna setups. The majority of wireless devices are 1x1 or 2x2 antenna products.

there's a ton of misinformation out there on wireless. I'd recommend reading this article for a better understanding:

Re: R7000 Slow WiFi Speed

Is there a Netgear recommended wifi router that would give gig wireless speeds or something close to it?

Re: R7000 Slow WiFi Speed

Its not usually the router holding you back but the device you're testing on.

Many are 1x1 antenna or 2x2 antenna devices. And many don't support 160hz operation (including apple).

If you have a 2x2 antenna device AND it is capable of 160hz operation (and your area doesn't have radar), you can potentially hit it with the R7800 if you're close to the router.

Otherwise the higher end AX routers can do it if you're device is ax capability and you get a decent enough router. But again, you need to be close to the router. 5ghz speeds fall off quickly with distance.

this is true of all devices. you can read more about wireless limitations and expectations here:
