R7000P and Smart Connect: Does this feature ever cause connection drops?
So I'm one of the people dealing with constant connection drops on my R7000P router, and I'm wondering if the Smart Connect feature might have anything to do with it. Has this been anyone else's expe...
You can disable it and try.
1. what firmware are you on?
2. what modem/gateway are you connected to?
3. does it happen only to wireless devices or do wired drop as well?
4. have y ou tried changing what wireless channels you use?

I did, and am curious to see. Also, I am the guy who posted earlier about this, and you gave some suggestions but I needed extra info, as I wasn't sure what applied to the Arris and what applied to the Netgear. Anyway, I did reset the Netgear to its factory settings, so we'll also see if that helped. One thing I'm not clear on yet is...
1) Should the Netgear be in Router or AP mode? From the description of both, it would seem Router is the correct setting, though I feel like you or someone suggested AP.

Seems like just wireless.

Not yet.
There are some other advanced wireless settings that can cause connection drops when used in combination with smart connect.
These are auto channel select on your 2.4 GHz band and 20/40 MHz coexistence.
Experiment by shutting off smart connect, auto channel selection on 2.4 MHZ, and 20/40 MHZ coexistence then choosing channel 11 for 2.4 MHz and 48 for 5GHz. Test to see if this helps. There are lots of combinations of channels and features you can work with.
There are a variety of client receivers that may not work nicely all the time with the combination of features you have enabled. The result is they choose not to play.
If I remember correctly, you didn't wan to try access point mode with the Netgear.
If the Arris isn't functioning properly in passthrough mode, than try the DMZ option we mentioned on the prior conversation.
You can also try changing what channels is broadcast on as Kitsap mentions.
Putting "the latest" doesn't help when it comes to firmware as many times the auto-update process doesn't function properly. Especially when you're in a double nat.

From the description of it, it sounded like it makes the Netgear just another gateway to something else, like the Arris is, but then maybe that's a good thing?

I had this problem even with the firmware it came with initially. And even then, the auto-update function never worked. Even when I had it check for updates, it would say none were available when in fact there were.
And I keep hearing about double NATs, but I don't even know what those are. Any pointers there?
1. A double nat is what happens when you cascade routers and have them in router mode. You have more than one device handling dhcp/nat. It can create issues. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-double-NAT-and-why-is-it-bad
2. You still didn't put what firmware version you're on.
3. Google and your ISP is a great resource for fixing issue with an isp supplied device. they're going to have more knowledge of it than we do since we don't have that device and don't use it. I've frequently seen issues with that specific model in double nats
4. In access point mode, some features are disabled on the netgear but your arris can still runs those features. You don't have to shut off the wifi on it. Its just recommended to prevent interference. You can always leave it on and use its guest network. Just make sure to have it on a different channel than the netgear.
