I bought this router about 6 months ago from Best Buy--brand new. We've had on and off problems with it from the get-go. Wifi drops almost every day, sometime several times a day. I have 3 kids that were home distance learning, so I thought that was the culprit, but it's only getting worse and the kids aren't home all day on their computers anymore.
I decided I'd get the app and register it and see if I could figure anything out. Lo and behold, the serial number is already registered.
When that failed, I tried to get access through the routerlogin site. The password ("password") didn't work, and I never created one when I first got it. It told me I had the incorrect password, so I followed the steps to get a password reset and two security questions popped up--"Name of your older sister", "Name of your younger sister". I'm an only child (Ha!)
Clearly, someone has had this router before--??
Do I take it back to Best Buy?
Is it worth it to try to reset it, like I've seen some people suggest in other comments?
The thing is kind of a piece of crap--today it dropped our wifi half a dozen times.
I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks!

What is your "this router"? Look for "Model" on the product label.
Firmware version?
> Model: A7000|Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi USB Adapter - USB 3.0
Not a router.
> Do I take it back to Best Buy?
Your decision.

Probably, but, with my weak psychic powers, I can't see what "some
people suggest in other comments". I can think of one way to find out.
Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Documentation. Get the User Manual (at least). Read.
Look for "Reset".

Re: Router Already Registered
You can try updating the firmware manually and see if that happens or reverting to a previous firmware that is considered by people as more stable but you'll have to research these type of forums to see what people are saying. If you need to get back into your router settings maybe you can also reset it and it will be back to factory defaults where you'll need to fill out all those questions like who is your sister but you get to decide how to answer that as though its the first time you're using that router.
