You might start with an oft-neglected resource:

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation. Get the User Manual (at least). Read. Look for
"Types of Logins". Further reading might not hurt, either.

Which kind of "didn't work"? Actual message?
If someone has changed that password, then "password" won't work.
Look for "Factory Settings" in the User Manual.
