Unable to download windows updates when connected to r7000

I have an odd issue. Starting a couple of months ago I can no longer download windows updates when connected to the router. This is true for all PC's in my home (4). Windows update will recognize that there are updates available, but remains at 0% download progress. Bypassing the router immediately starts the download. I have tried updating to latest firmware (1.0.11.116) and also reset to factory default, but still the same problem. Any idea what could be causing this? I never had issues like this in the past.

Have you tried a different dns provider? 

Try googles at 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4

cloudfare: 1.1.1.1

what modem/gateway do you have?

I am connected to a smart hub ZTE MF279T, and I have already tried Cloudfare and Google both on router level and device.

that hub has its own integrated router functions. 

do you have it in passthrough/modem only mode? 

or the Netgears IP address in its DMZ?
or the netgear in access point mode? 

otherwise you're running a double nat.

Yes it's in passthrough. No problems with automatic updates for other software, only windows update.

does it work if you put the hotspot back in router mode and the netgear in access point mode?

Well, apparently it's not possible to turn off the NAT on the ZTE.... so I set the R7000 to AP mode instead. I've got a online connection but not able to access the R7000 in this mode at all. Using the IP 10.0.0.1 gets me a "connection timed out."

that's because in access point mode, the zte assigns the ip address for the router. Log into its attached devices page (or equivalent) and it should show the r7000's ip address.

The ZTE's router is junk. Does not show IP's on connected devices, only mac address.

Ended up resetting the router, entered in IP manually, then back to AP mode. Seems to be working fine now, but sad not to be able to use any of the routers features such as QoS, access control etc.

If the zte had better or even just properly function settings, would could get it working. 

Its sad when you're limited because of other equipment.
