Wanting To Replace My Apple Airport

Hi:  I have a Mac and use the Apple Airport modem / router to access my ISP provider.  The Airport is then connected to my Google Mesh system.

My usage is office mail and streaming of NetFlics / AppleTV & Other Streaming Services

As the Airport is old I would like to replace it with a new modem / router and was wondering which modem / router  you would recommend.

The area of my house is 3500 sq ft but the Google mesh system gives me pretty good coverage.  Also Wifi 5 or 6 would be preferable.

Michael:  I just want to replace the modem as the Airport is old I would like to replace it with a new modem (not a router as the Google Wifi Mesh system provides that feature)  and was wondering which of  products you would recommend.

Are you replacing the whole thing? Modem and router? Or do you just want a router that you can connect to the modem bit of the Apple Airport?

Apple Airport could be one of many things. What do you have?

If you want a new modem, then your unnamed ISP is a good place to start. It should have a list of compatible devices.

Experienced users prefer using separate modems and routers. This gives them a much bigger choice in routers. Modem/routers rarely have the same choice of features.

Modem/routers are also at the back of the queue when it comes to firmware updates for security and new features. Indeed, for most cable modem/routers there aren't firmware updates, because ISPs don't allow users or device makers to push out updates. And they rarely get round to it themselves.

When it comes to routers a good place to start is with the product pages. Fill in your needs and circumstances, and see what comes up.

    Routers here:

Wifi Router | Wireless Routers for Home | NETGEAR

Fancier stuff with a focus on wifi here:

Orbi: Whole Home WiFi System for Better WiFi Everywhere | NETGEAR

See what takes your fancy, and what fits in with your budget. Then check this place for users views. (But remember this place is where people bring problems, not praise.) And see if you can find a review site that covers what you are thinking of buying.

Modems depend on your internet service. Cable? DSL? Optical to the premises?

I am not familiar with what the Airport does.

Your ISP is the best place to ask for a list of compatible modems.

But what do you expect a new one to do? Unless they have changed the sort of Internet you get, with an upgraded communications protocol for example, a new modem isn't likely to do much for you.
