MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Hello! I've got a setup consisting of an MR80 router and two MS80 satellites. All devices are updated to firmware V1.1.7.12. The satellites are currently named Satellite-1 and Satellite-2... defaults, I believe. I'd like to rename them to something a little more descriptive re: their locations, but can't figure out any way to do so that will stick.

In the web interface, whether connecting to the router or either of the satellites, I can't find any option to rename them at all. If it's there, it's well hidden! In the Nighthawk Android app, I can go to Network Map, then tap on one of the satellites, then Details, then the satellite name, I am given the option to change it, but then when I tap Save, the change is not applied.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there some other way of going about this that would be more effective? Thanks!

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

You might set a IP address reservation on the MR for the MS for each IP address, then I believe you can change the name seen on the Add IP address reservation page before applying the change is about all you can do.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

This is possible, though I see the name change only appears on the IP reservation page, nowhere else in the app or internal web pages, which isn't much of a solution. This is something I'd really like to see Netgear fix in an app update, and/or better yet, in firmware so there's a way to change sat names without going through the Android app at all. Regardless, thanks for your suggestion!

Something to post about this here:

Will bring to up to NG as well.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Just took a look at my MK63 system and I see that I changed the MS names to a custom name, just added a dash and DR for Dining Room and BM for Basement. I did this when I added IP address reservations to the MR for the MS:

AttachedDevicesCustomName.png

The name also is seen in the NH app as well:

NHAppNetworkMapCustomNames.PNG

So I presume changing the names when you add an IP address reservation for the MS will work for naming them. Should work like this on the 80 series too.

Hmm, doesn't work for me. The only place my names show up is in the list of IP reservations.

Huh, I missed that! Thanks for the heads up. I'll give it a try as soon as I'm good to have a little downtime.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Well, that was "fun". Applying the firmware update through the web interface bricked my router. Fortunately, I was able to revive it by uploading the firmware file over TFTP,  and had made a backup of my settings prior to the bricking. Restoring from the backup file mostly worked, but my device names and icons were all screwed up and most needed to be re-entered manually. All this and the IP reservation renames for my satellites still don't propagate anywhere beyond the list of IP reservations itself.

It would be fair to say I'm not at my happiest with the firmware side of this product right now.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Can you explain how you updated the MR? I presume you were using a recommended wired PC?

What browser did you use?

Did you update the MS first before the MR?

Last time I updated a 80 series I use MS Edge with a wired PC. NO issues.

Wired PC, current Firefox, satellites upgraded first. Yeah, it's worked fine for me in the past, too. Not this time.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Ok, Might try MS Edge next time.

So is the MR at newer or prior FW version?

I would have done a full factory reset and setup from scratch with the newer FW version loaded and checked before loading any saved backup config from file. Sometimes this can cause problems in newer versions of FW using older configs made from older versions of FW.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

I'll keep Edge in mind next time an update comes around. I'm at the newer firmware now. At this point I'm throwing up my hands and will just live with the default satellite names; if the app rename is still broken and there's no option to properly rename from the browser by now, I'm pessimistic about that ever changing.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Wonder why it works for me on my 60 series.

I'll pass this on to NG for review. I think they could make it work.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Thanks. Sorry about the grumbling in my last post. The router brick and having to manually re-label my devices after recovery was exasperating, and the present but non-working satellite rename in the Android app chaps my hide a little. I do appreciate your efforts here.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Fully understand. NG has some oddities in there business for sure.

So I found this hidden process on my Android pad with the NH app.

Press on the "Satellite Name" section seen here with a finger touch while on the Details section of the NH app:

Screenshot_20230107_083550_Nighthawk.jpg

Should bring up the Edit Satellite Name screen:

Press Save when done.

Can you do this as well?

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Haha, well, unfortunately, that's exactly the "present but non-working" method in the app that I was talking about. I can enter a new name there, tap save, and then... it just kind of gets ignored. The change isn't applied/doesn't propagate anywhere at all; the satellite name remains default in both the app and router web page.

OK, please submit a bug report while on this page and let NG know.

I'll pass this on as well.

Re: MR80 / MS80 - Can't rename satellites

Yeh, in setting mine up I noticed that not a lot of Meta-Data as a whole was coming over more so than I have ever seen. And a big part was I could and did change the Satellite names, but it did not stick, ever. I also had to change many Clients' info and that has stuck. Although, I have never encountered a lack of information of this magnitude.
