   That's accurate?  Not an R6900v2 or R6900P?

"try" how, exactly?  Which file are you trying to load into the
router?

> How do I upgrade to the new firmware?

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and
Software Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the
kit(s).  Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file
for instructions.  (In the User Manual, look for "firmware", and,
especially, for a topic like "Manually Upload Firmware to the Router".)

I login via ethernet webbrower through my PC(windows 10)

I tried to download the file, but it is only a note release informational zip file, not an actual execuation file.

_WHICH_ "the file"?  Has it a name?  Which part of "exactly" was
unclear?

I'm confident that you're wrong about that, but it's tough to prove
it until you reveal which file you have (which, most likely, contains a
firmware image file along wuth the Release Notes file).

What, exactly, does "an actual execuation file" mean to you?

> That's accurate? Not an R6900v2 or R6900P?

Still wondering.  Look for "Model" on the product label.

Re: R6900 firmware invalid message

NetGear support website does not have actual firmware to download.

Router model is R6900.  Not an R6900v2 or R6900P

also, when I unzip the downloaded file, it opens up to a " R6900 chk file" which can't be ran.

   Sure it does.

   That's the kit.

> Router model is R6900. Not an R6900v2 or R6900P

Ok.  That wasn't so hard, was it?

> [...] when I unzip the downloaded file, it opens up to a " R6900 chk

The actual name of that file would be "R6900-V1.0.2.16_10.0.42.chk"?

> [...] which can't be ran.

That's right.  It'a a firmware image file for an R6900, not an
executable program (for your (unspecified) computer type).

Did you?  Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model
number, and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look
for "Manually Upload New Firmware and Update the Router".

Note that the instructions do _not_ suggest trying to _run_ the

firmware image file.

   Possibly interesting;

This whole procedure gets much easier when you stop and read the
instructions (and then follow them), rather than assuming that you know
what to do (when you don't).  Then, if problems remain, it might help if
you accurately reported what you did, and what happened when you did it.

Re: 66900 firmware invalid message

even when I download firmware through your provided link, it shows chk file after I unzip it.

You seems to enjoy scolding others rather than blaming Netgear for their failure for such a simple task

   That's what should happen.

I see no reason to blame Netgear for your failure to read and follow
the directions in the (easily available) documentation.

Did you?  And then what, exactly, did you do?

If you expect me to retype those instructions here, then you're in
for disappointment.

R6900 firmware invalid -- Did this get Answered?

To get my router updated...

I went to the Netgear site and downloaded the .zip

unarchived the chk to an accessible location

Logged into the router using my wired PC using a browser

Using the Advanced Tab, navigate to Administration

and select Router Upgrade

Browse to the .chk file, extracted earlier

and selected Upload

...I think it auto applied once the file was moved from the local drive onto the router.

Hope that helps anyone landing on this older discussion.

This updated to the current v1.0.2.16_10.0.42 ( at the time of this post)

I think I had been using v1.0.2.8_X

This final screenshot (message 12 of 12) did the trick for me, and I wish I hadn't read the previous 11 messages.  This last one was super helpful. THANK YOU.

Certainly, an exchange consisting mostly of:

"What are you doing?  Read and follow the published instructions."

and:

"No.  I expect my intuition to succeed, despite the instructions."

might fail to be very enlightening.  Actually reading and following the
published instructions would likely be more productive.  Aside from the
User Manual (see above for directions):

      "NETGEAR router"         https://kb.netgear.com/23960
      "Orbi router"            https://kb.netgear.com/31573
      "NETGEAR WiFi Extender"  https://kb.netgear.com/000061572

   Potentially misleading:

      "NETGEAR product"        https://kb.netgear.com/000053880

"6. Unzip the downloaded file and run the .exe file."

For many models, there is no "the .exe file".
