7800 with 7000 as a wireless repeater?

Hi Peoples,

Has anyone successfully configured a 7000 as a wireless repeater to a 7800 in AP mode? I have a client who has a 7800 in AP mode and wants to extend the wifi using a 7000. I've never used these devices and can't figure it out. It seems that you need to configure both the AP and the repeater with wifi security set to none. Am I missing something? My client doesn't want an insecure network. If someone has done this and can provide some clues as to how the 7800 and 7000 should be configured so we have a secure repeating wifi network I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Re: 7800 with 7000 as a wireless repeater?

The solution ended up being to throw the 7000 in the bin and just use the 7800. Originally the 7000 was the primary AP, we swapped it out with the 7800 and the coverage was such that an extender wasn't needed (thankfully). None of the options for connecting these was appealing given the lack of in-house cabling and the associated expense. In the end, he's happy and has acceptable coverage so we'll put that one in the lessons learned box.

Re: 7800 with 7000 as a wireless repeater?

I don't think the R7000 firmware supports repeater mode, but I could be wrong

you don't want to use repeater anyways as it caps the bandwidth in half due to constant need to be in contact with the router it's repeating the signal of

if the R7800 is in AP mode you can set the R7000 in AP mode too and connect it to one of the ports of the R7800. But this requires pulling a cable

It depends. R7000P does not support WDS, but the R7000 should.

There is support material, including a manual, for the R7000 somewhere at the end of this link:

See the section Set Up a Wireless Distribution System.

The R7800 does not do WDS.

Maybe it is the AP mode that is the sticking point.

Sounds like a complicated network.

Re: 7800 with 7000 as a wireless repeater?

A second option is the Netgear EX8000 Wi-Fi Range Extender. The EX8000 can set up a 4 stream, 5 GHz backhaul to the R7800. The EX8000 has three radios (2 x 5 GHz and 1 x 2.4 GHz). There is a good review of the EX8000 connected to a R7800 on SmallNetBuilder.com.

A third option if there is cable TV coax in the house is to use a pair of MoCA 2.0-Bonded devices like the ActionTec ECB6200 to connect the R7800 to the R7000. I use a pair of these to extend Ethernet from the first to the second floor of my house, and I get 920 Mbps in one direction.
