After upgrade to 1.0.2.90 R7800 (X4S) does not open an http port.
Logged into the R7800. The GUI informed me that a firmware update was available. Using GUI downloaded and upgraded firmware from 1.0.2.62 to 1.0.2.90. Routing and WiFi are working, and the router ...

Do NOT user the TFTP method to upgrade the router. This is only for last resort.
First try the factory reset with the router and setup from scratch with a good browser and wired PC at 192.168.1.1.

@michaelkenward
FURRYe38 Thank you for your help. I will try the TFTP upgrade this weekend when it will not impact my
wife's work and share the result.

michaelkenward Thank you and roger that. Use TFTP as last resort.
Step 1. Factory Reset
Step 2. Initial setup from desktop PC connected directly to router via RJ45.

I felt I owed you an explanation/update. To mitigate risk I purchased a new backup NetGear router before resetting the now
balky one. Received it Saturday evening. Working around my wife's schedule, I set up the new one and connected it to our
cable modem. They refused talk to each other, even after repeated power-cycles of both router and modem. The cable
modem GUI is useless for troubleshooting this, and the router has no clue as to why it does not have internet access.
I reconnected our balky router for now to resume using our internet connection.
I am installing wireshark now to see what I can learn about this when I can resume working with the new router.

Which NG router did you purchase?
A power OFF of the CM1150v and the new router for 30 seconds then back on with the modem first then the new router should have connected them and got internet services.
What CAT# cable are you using in between? CAT6 is recommended.
Might check to see if your ISP needs some MAC Cloning however I doubt it.

To answer your question, Cat6 ethernet cable modem-to-router, desktop-to-router, and router-to-switch
for peripherals. Switch-to-printers, scanner and NAS is Cat5.
So, hallelujah, and thank you, 30+ seconds was the key. Apparently state persists longer than 10-15 seconds
that I assumed was enough. Progress. Replying to your post via the "new" router. Now I can attempt to fix the
old one without inconveniencing my wife.

A factory reset did not improve matters. While the router and WiFi still functioned, HTTP and the GUI were not functional.
A successful tftp upgrade to 1.0.2.90 did not improve matters either. The balky R7800 still does not expose the GUI.
If I were the supervising engineer or manager I would ask two questions at this point:
1. Was the upgrade to 1.0.2.90 regression-tested back to 1.0.2.62? (I suspect not.)
2. Were there any changes to the download or DFU code between '62 and '90? (Entirely possible.)
If so, what were they?
As I no longer have tech support on this product, I have no way of injecting these questions into Netgear tech support
and I am unlikely to get any answers. My best bet is to locate and load successively older firmware versions for this
router until I find one that works.
Thank you both for your timely and valuable advice.

A couple of thoughts to add to this discussion.
The term “Factory Default Reset” is a misnomer that is scattered far and wide on message boards and in OEM manuals. The recessed push button action does not return the router to factory default firmware. The action returns all settings to the default values established within the firmware that is currently installed (flashed) on the router. Something definitely got lost in translation.
I own an R7800 router and would not operate it for one hour without installation of Voxel’s firmware. Voxel takes the stock Netgear firmware and polishes it to where it works reliably. Start with the Read Me file on his web page: http://www.voxel-firmware.com/Downloads/Voxel/html/index.html. It is easy to go back to Netgear stock firmware from Voxell if you want.
As you have found out, the startup sequence and timing is critical to establish a connection between a modem and router. In particular when you change out one or the other.
When you save a configuration file for later use, be sure and rename the file to establish which version of firmware was in place when it was created. The configuration file for firmware version X-01 most likely is not compatible with the configuration file for firmware version X-02. Lots of headaches can be created by backloading a configuration file that was created with a different firmware version than is presently flashed on the router.

Final post. Regressed to 1.0.2.62, the original firmware version. This presented open HTTP (80) and HTTPS(443)
ports and a working GUI. Upgraded to 1.0.2.68, which also presented HTTP and a working GUI. Versions
1.0.2.74 through 1.0.2.90 work as WiFi a router without presenting HTTP ports and of course no working GUI.
I may have answered my questions. The firmware grew beyond 27MB at version '74. My guess is that my R7800 has
a memory issue between 27 and 28MB and code essential to the GUI is at end of the image. My R7800 is in good
working condition with .68 so I now have a spare that unfortunately cannot be upgraded. But I learned some useful
lessons so it isn't a total loss. Thanks for all your help.

Since you consider your R7800 a spare, you would be doing yourself a disservice by not installing the Voxel firmware for a test run.
- mover0Jun 28, 2022Aspirant
My use of "spare" was a careless choice of words. The term "emergency backup" would more appropriately convey my concept of its function at this point.
I had not hear of Voxel. I am concerned about the potential for security issues. I think that the wide distribution of Netgear releases make them more likely to get some attention with respect to security holes.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. It is nice to know that there is an alternative to
Netgear in a pinch. - FURRYe38Jun 28, 2022Guru - Experienced User
Wonder if you have a older HW version of the R7800.
Glad you got it working. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.

Who said it was? Did I miss something?
I see no hint of that accusation in the messages from mover0
Their concern was "the potential for security issues security".
