Anyway to use OpenDNS with the Nighthawk R7500v2

I need assisstance to get parental controls working with the R7500v2. I have updated firmware and am not able to do parental controls in the nighthawk phone app and the desktop netgear genie is no longer supporting this router.

Any assisstance would be appreciated.

I am worried that I cannot limit adult sites for my childrens devices.

Can't you enter the OpenDNS settings in the custom DNS fields on the R7500v2?

Try using a browser on your phone. Point it at:

https://netgear.opendns.com/sign_in.php

And sign in with the usual credentials.

It should work with mobiles as well as wired devices. It does here.

Re: Anyway to use OpenDNS with the Nighthawk R7500v2

I have tried to go to the OpenDNS website like you suggested. I was super hopeful when I got in, but am still not able to apply the settings to my router. I am guessing Netgear turned it off or disabled that some how in the new firmware.

Man I am so frustrated that I will have to buy a new router to protect my kids from the crap on the internet.

"not able" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

Re: Anyway to use OpenDNS with the Nighthawk R7500v2

I was able to get to the OpenDNS website and found my router still in on my account with same mac address. I applied the level of protection(Moderate) I wanted on the Open DNS website.

I cleared out all my cache like another suggestion said to do. - still about to go on adult sites
I rebooted my PC. - still about to go on adult sites

I rebooted my router. - still about to go on adult sites

I reset my router. - still about to go on adult sites

The nighthawk phone app does not have an area to do parental permissions. This is why I am looking for a PC related fix.

I am not sure what else I can do to fix the issue. I also am not sure what I can say to help others help me. My response was one out of frustration and thought that was pretty clear.

Ok.  Did you then tell your router to use the OpenDNS DNS servers?

Or, as previously asked:

> Can't you enter the OpenDNS settings in the custom DNS fields on the
> R7500v2?

If you don't know what the question means, then perhaps you should
say so.

I don't use this stuff, so I know nothing, but my (dim) impression
was that you need to tell your router to use the OpenDNS DNS servers
(instead of whatever your ISP gives you as its default DNS servers).
I'd expect to find this stuff at BASIC > Internet : Domain Name Server
(DNS) Address...

What, exactly, do you find there?

Presumably, the OpenDNS documentation tells you what to specify for
those DNS server addresses.  Are you reading any OpenDNS documentation?

You can tell "the OpenDNS website" all kinds of stuff about what you
want to block or pass, but if you then don't use the OpenDNS DNS
servers, what good will all your instructions do?

And how helpful did you figure that that would be?  As opposed, say,
to answering the questions asked here, that is.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Documentation.  Get the User Manual (at least).  Read.  Look for
DNS.

Re: Anyway to use OpenDNS with the Nighthawk R7500v2

I used the DNS server numbers they provided on the website and checked twice and restarted router to be sure they were saved in the router.

I appreciate you trying to help.

I am just frustrated due to the fact that I know how this stuff should work, but seems that netgear is blocking the work arounds for some reason. I have yet to find anyone that has been able to apply OpenDNS settings to their R7500v2. It is just really bad on netgear's part to cause this issue that was never there before.

"used" how, exactly?  Are those addresses a secret?  Why hide the
details?  People here can't see what you did, or what happened when you
did it.

And what is the computer using as its DNS server(s)?

Another possibility with modern browsers is the use of DNS-over
HTTPS.  See, for example:

      https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-dns-over-https

Some individuals and organizations rely on DNS to block malware,
enable parental controls, or filter your browser's access to
websites. When enabled, DoH bypasses your local DNS resolver and
      defeats these special policies.

> [...] I have updated firmware [...]

As always, an actual version number would be more useful than your
opinion of what's "updated" today.  "updated" from what to what?

> [...] I am guessing Netgear turned it off or disabled that some how in
> the new firmware. [...]

I doubt it, but if you believe that, then you could install some
older firmware.  Did this stuff work as desired before the firmware
update?

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look
for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and Software
Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the kit(s).
Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file for
instructions.  (In the User Manual, look for "firmware", and,
especially, for a topic like "Manually Upload Firmware to the Router".)

> I am just frustrated due to the fact that I know how this stuff should
> work,

You might think that you know, but it's not obvious to me.

> [...] but seems that netgear is blocking the work arounds for some
> reason.

"the work arounds"?  To me it seems that something is wrong, but it's
tough to guess what without some basic information.  Speculation is not
a good substitute for facts.

> [...] It is just really bad on netgear's part to cause this issue that
> was never there before.

"before" _what_?  If you're convinced that some change caused the
problem, then revert the change to see if you're right.

Re: Anyway to use OpenDNS with the Nighthawk R7500v2

Once again, I appreciate your "help" on this manner.
I am going to be done with the topic on here with you. I will keep working on it and if I find a work around I will come back and post my steps.
I am sure it is mostly on my part that is keeping you from being able to assist me better, but the way you are communicating back to me seems rude and disrespectful.

I am not sure the reason you were even trying to help, but once again thank you for taking time to even try.
