Attached Device Names
First of all, in order to change the names in the attaached devices you have to do it through routerlogin.net. in addition, the name changes must be without spaces.
Now, the proble is the Nighthawak app, it does not reflect the name changes done through routerlogin.net, instead it shows the default names and there's no way to make them match.
How to match the device names shown in both routerlogin.net and the Nighthawk app?

I can also edit names and change icons with the Nighthawk app on my various Netgear routers.
But I have an R7000 and an R7800.

This is not my experience. I have many devices with spaces in their names.

This is not my experience. I have just changed several names in the app and then confirmed that they stick in the browser graphical user interface.
What is the firmware version on your R6080? That can influence what you can do in the GUI and in the apps.
I should add that the R6080 is pretty well Netgear's bottom of the range router.
According to Netgear's manual for this device, not always the most reliable source of information, the LAN and WAN support only 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX. That makes it slower than many newer Internet services and most modern network hardware. This may not matter to you, but be warned that it will hobble you if you ever sign up for faster Internet. It also slows down whatever is going on in your local network. Newer devices support 1000BASE-TX.
It probably doesn't make much difference, but the right place to talk about the R6080, and other non-Nighthawk routers, and to see what other people experience with it, is here:General WiFi Routers (Non-Nighthawk) - NETGEAR Communities

I don't know why, but in my case, the names must not contain spaces, otherwise I'll receive an error message:
"routerlogin.net says Invalide device name."
As far as I know, I have the latest Nighahwk app downloaded, and nowhere can I find "change device name" option. It lists the attached devices in their default name, I guess the way the system recognizes them. So, the only option I have to know what device shown as "unknown" in the app is to go through the browser, routerlogin.net.
Regardless how good or bad my router may be, this is someting the app should have the ability to sync the lists with any Netgear product.

Which Nighthawk app is that? iOS or Android?
The path is straightforward in the Android version (V2.9.6.1513).
Start with Devices. Pick the one you want to edit.
Then when you have got there you can change the name and/or edit the icon.
Here at least, these also carry over to the router (R7800).
