Connecting Brother Printer

I purchased a Brother printer a few years ago.  Was never able to connect it to our wireless, so I thought I'd give it one more try before I give it away.  When I press the "wifi" button on the printer it says that it is "Connecting WLAN".  However, it consistently times out.  I have placed it within 5 feet of my router and I have also went into the settings on the router to see if the MAC address of the printer shows up as being not allowed, and I don't see it there.  Any ideas before I reach out to Brother?  I don't know if the issue is arising on the printer or router side of things. Thanks.
