Considering new AC router...maybe R7000?

I have an Asus RT-N66U and all of my devices are 802.11n devices. I don't necessarily require an AC router, but have read that the R7000 and RT-AC68U are two of the best out there, and that there is benefit even for legacy clients.

So the two questions....

Is getting an AC router a waste of money if no current AC devices (will upgrade as practical)?

Any thoughts specifically on the R7000 vs RT-AC68U? I've seen the reviews and head to head comparisons, but it always seems to come down to a "coke vs pepsi" type of preference. Is that the case?

If don't have AC clients then save your money.
