Do both ends of bridge require bridge mode? (R7800 wifi to AC1750 R6400v2)

Do the routers at both ends of a wireless bridge connection need to be set to bridge mode? Finding conflicting answers. Currently have R7800 router for all wired and WIFI devices. Having sporadic WIFI connection issues with devices located in a garage detached from main home where router is located. Hardwire to garage not an option at this time. Purchased an AC1750 R6400v2 with the intent of setting it to bridge mode and hardwiring garage devices to it.

   No.  Selecting bridge mode transforms a router into a wireless client
device.  Configuring all your routers as wireless client devices would
leave you with no router.

exceeded only by the amount of useless "information" available on the
Internet.

   Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number
("R6400v2"), and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Look for
"Set Up the Router in Bridge Mode".  (What does it tell you to do with
the main router?)

You might have got away with using a wifi repeater to do that. No need for the R7800 to be in bridge mode. But the savings might not be that great.
