Enable Video Network X4S Nighthawk 7800

Hello,

I have the Nighthawk X4S router. Trying to get the best network reliability I can for streaming wirelessly from a Plex server (local server connected via ethernet cord directly to router).

What in the world is the TRUE definition of the "Enable Video Network" feature on this router?

The manual pushes the definition with the understanding, at least my understanding, this mode is intended for GUESTS. Is it only beneficial for guests (given I allow guest mode)?

So bigger question, does this help my steaming capabilities on my private encrypted network...or only for guests logged on to the guest network (if guest mode was activiated that is)?

OR, Should I enabled both the Guest mode/network AND check the box "Enable Video Network" and keep my streaming devices connected to the Guest network to get the best speeds for streaming video content?

Thanks,

Nick

Unfortunately, the feature no longer works and it's not supported.

The option was implemented previously with 802.11a product base on Atheros chipset and at this point it's no longer supported in 11ac.

The feature will be removed in the next firmware release and right now were working in editing the manual.

Re: Enable Video Network X4S Nighthawk 7800

Here is the feature explained in the manual.

"Enable a WiFi Video Network

Guest networks allows visitors at your home to use the Internet without using your WiFi security key. For optimal HD streaming performance for your guests, you can enable a 5 GHz guest video network. When this the video network feature is enabled, the router uses video reliability algorithms to reduce jitter and packet loss during video streaming."

So why do I want to optimize viewing for my guests? Sorry for being selfish...but...gorget them!!! I want the optimal HD streaming performance for myself and my home theater! They can enjoy the"guest optimal HD performance" on my big screen!!! hahaha

So...really hoping a Nighthawk router specialist will weigh in on the subject!

Thanks,

Nick

Must be an issue with the Nighthawk. Another feature that nobody knows how to use.

I've never seen the details behind the feature explained, and I haven't seen any reviews that tested it.

It appears with the Netgear routers that the default configuration is the optimal configuration.  I wouldn't make any changes to the default configuration that I didn't need to make.

It does seem odd to have a basic feature with no explanation at all.

I generally have turned on mu-mimo and beamforming.

Re: Enable Video Network X4S Nighthawk 7800

Thanks @StephenB and @LeeH for the reply! Glad I'm not the only one that noticed this. The streaming is overall pretty good but does become a little spotty at times when streaming Plex. I will receive a message saying something like "your network is too slow to stream this content directly". So something is causing a huge spike but both components are AC capable (Nvidia Shield TV and the Netgear X4S) so theoretically, they should be performing at the very top of the spectrum.

Mu-mimo and beamforming have both been enabled. I'm going to turn off the Video Network since I have the guest network disabled. OR...I may try just for the sake of trying and enable the guest network and give it a try. But living in an apartment complex, not sure if others will jump on the guest network and slow down things even more.

Thanks all !!

You can set security on the guest network, it doesn't have to be open.  You can even use it instead of your main network.

It could be interference.  That can come from other wifi networks, but also other radios using 5G spectrum (such as dect phones) or even microwave ovens.

Do you know the bitrate of the videos tthat this is happening with?

Thank you @ElaineM for your response and attention to this topic/feature! Now I can stop searching for answers and work on other ways to improve my home network streaming.

Step 2....upgrade my old NAS ! 🙂
