FTP stopped workng

I've had an ftp server running for over 2 years without issues and last week it just stopped working.  I now receive the following message when trying to connect; 425 Can't open data connection, Failed to retrieve directory listing.  I triple checked my setting, I even setup a new ftp server on an old pc but nothing worked.  Finally I though let me try hooking up my old DLink DIR-835 router and after configuring it as needed my ftp connection issues are gone.  What possible reason would there be for my Netgear R7000 to randomly prevent my ftp from working, all other features continued to work without issue.  The FW on the router when the ftp stopped working was 1.0.9.18 I have since upgraded to 1.0.9.26 but the problem persisted.

Any help would be appriciated as I've been stumped to find a solution.

I have reset the R7000 and configured from scratch with no luck!

Re: FTP stopped workng

Any change in IP addressing for your PCs? Make sure your using reserved IP addresses for these PCs ON the router.

Is FTP operation only needed for LAN side or both WAN and LAN sides? Is LAN side not working at all?

Any changes or configurations updates on the PCs recently, ie. updates?

Check cabling as well.

Re: FTP stopped workng

No changes to IP addressing, the FTP server has a static IP (has been this way since day 1)

FTP is needed for both LAN and WAN, neither worked after failure.

No recent configuration changes to PC including windows updates.  Like I mentioned by just changing to my old router connection to the FTP began to work again! Same server, same cabling, same setting.

I would also like to point out that the router continued to function normally for all other function.

Re: FTP stopped workng

Is the Static IP address of this PC inside or out side the routers default IP address pool. Any static IP addressed devices should be outside of the routers IP address pool.

Any security software on this PC? If so, temporarily disable this.

Is Windows firewall enabled on the PC, disable this temporarily as well.

Re: FTP stopped workng

If I connect my Nighthawk R7000 router the FTP connection fails LAN and WAN.  But nothing else is affected.

As soon as I switch to my OLD dlink dir-835 router the FTP works!

I have spent a week trying to figure this out and have done all the basic and advanced troubleshooting I could think of to resolve the issue.  It simply does not make any sense for it not to be working on the Netgear R7000!

The issue defintely lies with the R7000, not the server, not the cabling, not the switch.

Re: FTP stopped workng

What FW is the DIR router using?

There should be a NAT Filter option under Firewall I believe. Whats it's set for?

What is the R7000 NAT Filter set for?
