Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

Hello,

As I posted earlier I am still on V1.0.9.6_1.2.19. Which for me was the first release after many brought some basic stablity. This without turning on.

1. Guest network

2. QoS

3. DMZ

4. VPN

Hence not a single feature you would expect useful from a modern SOHO router.

Netgear as many other companies are very geared to the US market, forgetting that many other users outside this market don't need features like Disney Circlel  That even would break things. Also the NSA steered and sponsored data-collection that Netgear as US company does probably breaks things and isn't really appriciated by the rest of the world.

Not pointing the finger at the last post specifically, but I think we should not talk about stability until we have 48 hours under our belts. All that happens is someone posts "1.0.9.x seems stable" and then again the next day with "nope, turns out it wasn't!".

Yep, and I'd argue even longer in some cases.

In my case I was able to mitigate client wireless disconnects by rebooting the router, a solution which lasted only 12 to 24 hours.  Disabling the guest network (which also reboots the router) lasted 7 days for me.  When disconnects started happening again I used the previously posted shortcut of clicking "Apply" under "Wireless Setup" of the "Netgear Genie" router setup screen which caused my clients to re-connect again successfully. I saw drops within 12 hours of that action though so I wonder if a full reboot can cause the workaround to last longer.  I have an 2014 R7000 running the V1.0.9.14_1.2.25 firmware which is the update where I believe the client wireless disconnect problems started for me.  Previously everything had been running fine using 1.0.9.12 so I'm considering going back to that firmware revision or possibly trying Xwrt-Vortex if I don't see a fixed firmware from Netgear soon.

For those switching to Xwrt-Vortex does it mitigate the 2.4ghz band issues? Is it easy to install the new firmware? I am by no means a networking expert, just trying to maintain my home office. Someone technical (built my computer, setup home network) but limited in some ways.

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

So how do I go about flashing the new firmware once I download it from the website? Can I do it from my routerlogin.net page?

Flash it like any other firmware. It takes longer to boot up. After that, you can enjoy the stability that this router should have had all along.

Like I said I'm limited as far as routers go, I've never flashed firmware before.

Be careful that Xwrt-Vortex is not an open source firmware and we download only a compile version. We should thrust a Russia site and be sure that there are no spy process inside!

I'm scared for American Netgear for build in NSA backdoors 🙂

What does Xwrt-Vortex have that Advanced Tomato does not?

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

Advanced Tomato has more options than XWRT-Vortex. More options doesn't mean better, in most cases you do not want to touch the features because you can screw up a lot. XWRT-Vortex for R7000 is a port or XWRT-Merlin which is based on the Asus firmware (based on Tomato). As XWRT-Vortex uses the HW-acceleration drivers (just as NG does) it has no limitations in WAN to LAN speed like most of alternative firmware do have.

Going back doesn't help.

I went back to firmware 1.0.5.70_1.1.91 from 1 year ago and problems stays.

Now for 2 days on XWRT-VORTEX and seems oke now.

That's exactly my experience. It looks like something is screwed up after a certain FW upgrade. Going back to older FW doesn't solve it. I run XWRT-Vortex for about 8 months now, definitely won't go back to NG FW.

I'm having the same 2.4g/5g problems others are. 5g seems to work fine with most devices but nothing can obtain an IP address on the 2.4g band. This has been happening for some time now and none of the firmware updates seems to fix the issue. I'm running V1.0.9.18_1.2.27 right now.

We shouldn't have to run 3rd party software for the router to do what it's intended to. I know I'll never be purchasing a Netgear router again after this disaster.

I'm quite happy with my R7000, the hardware is fine although somewhat outdated now, but it still does the job well. The firmware however is buggy and luckily there are plenty of alternatives.

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

When downloading the "XWRT-Vortex" file, there is 2 files instead the folder, a .CHK and .TRX , which file to i use?

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

If you're flashing from a Netgear firmware you have to use the .chk file. If you are on XWRT-Vortex firmware you must use the .trx file. Please be aware that you will get a warning that the firmware is older than installed now. Ignore that message and proceed with flashing. Also booting takes a longer time. Just sit down, relax and wait for complete boot.

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

What rogier64 writes is correct, I only had problems with the logging of the router after loading this FW. I didn't get in because username and password where gone. After 2x reset of the router and several tries I got the setup wizard. After that it was a piece of cake.

Re: Feedback for R7000 New firmware 1.0.9.18

So to confirm, if I am flashing from stock Netgear firmware, I only need to load the .chk file?

I found this tutorial (http://avi.im/blag/2015/asus-wrt-merlin-on-netgear-r7000/) posted in another thread which says you do the .chk to get Tomato then the .trx to get XWRT-Vortex.
