Firmware Update for R6400

Trying to update the firmware on the router. I’ve tried via the app and trough router login.net. I get Unable to download GUI language file from Netgear server. I’ve tried downloading the firmware from the website and unzip the file there’s nothing there. Anyone have any recommendations

Re: Firmware Update for R6400

You have the R6400? What version of it?

What device are you using to extract the file?

What web browser are you using?

I just tried on v1 and v2 off the firmware for it and was able to download/extract them both.

Re: Firmware Update for R6400

V1,

Windows 10

Tried using internet explorer, Firefox, chrome, and edge browsers

Using a free file unzip program. Think it’s called unzipper. Can you recommend a better one.

Anything would be greatly appreciated

Is that accurate?  R6400[v1] or R6400v2?  Look for "Model" on the
product label.  Current firmware version?

"get" _how_?  When you do _what_, exactly?

You determined this _how_, exactly?  "nothing", or not what you
expected, or what, exactly?  An empty firmware kit is extremely
unlikely.

Sure.  Provide enough actual information that a reader who can't see
what you have, or what you did, or what happened when you did it, might
be able to understand all those things?

Really shouldn't matter much.  What you actually did with any
browser, and what happened when you did it, would be interesting.

"Tried" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

Again, practically any unzip program should be able to extract the
files from a Netgear router firmware kit.  Including the File Explorer's
built-in "Extract all..." feature.

As for "Using", see "not a useful problem description [...]", above.

When I access routerlogin.net and select the option there to update firmware this is when I get the message that says Unable to download GUI language file from Netgear server.

I have accessed routerlogin.net from multiple locations.  I have logged in on my laptop which is running Windows 10(have used Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome browsers). I have also logged in on my Iphone using Safari Browser.  I used the Nighthawk app and it stated an firmware udpate was available and directed me to routerlogin.net in my Safari Browser.  Same error message from all of these.

Which file, exactly, did you download?

I went to netgears website under support for the R6400 V1(which is the one I have) and clicked on the firmware link under the support section for this device. It downloaded a zip file to my laptop.

You determined this _how_, exactly?  "nothing", or not what you
expected, or what, exactly?  An empty firmware kit is extremely

Once I unzipped the file I went back to routerlogin.net and went through the steps to manually updated the firmware.  When i did so it gave me a message that the file inside was .CHK.  When i look in that folder I see the Firmware notes and the .cHK fill which apparently is not the one that it is looking for when I attempted to update the firmware through routerlogin.net.

My apologies for using a bad choice of words.

Again, my apologies that I did not use acceptable terminolgy when trying to explain my issue.

I have even used File Explorers Extract all feature and that didn't even work.

I will continue to work at it using the link you provided above.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

   Ok.  That's old (but consistent).

> Trying to update to Version:1.0.1.62_1.0.41

Why?  I see two newer versions.

> Which file, exactly, did you download?

Still a mystery.  That was not a trick question.

> [...] It downloaded a zip file to my laptop.

Did that "a zip file" have a name?  Is it a secret?

> I have even used File Explorers Extract all feature and that didn't

Regarding "didn't even work", see "not a useful problem description
[...]", above.

> Once I unzipped the file [...]

So, something _did_ work?  And you got what, exactly, when you did
whatever you did?

> [...] I went back to routerlogin.net and went through the steps to
> manually updated the firmware. [...]

What, exactly, were these "the steps"?

> [...] When i did so it gave me a message that the file inside was
> .CHK.

What was the actual message?  Copy+paste is your friend.

The firmware image file for an R6400[v1] is a ".chk" file.  For
example:

$ unzip -l R6400-V1.0.1.62_1.0.41.zip
Archive: R6400-V1.0.1.62_1.0.41.zip
  Length Date Time Name
--------- ---------- ----- ----
 32104506 08-03-2020 04:46 R6400-V1.0.1.62_1.0.41.chk
      669 08-03-2020 04:55 R6400-V1.0.1.62_1.0.41_Release_Notes.html
--------- -------
 32105175 2 files

> Again, my apologies that I did not use acceptable terminolgy when
> trying to explain my issue.

The problem is not "terminolgy".  The problem is that I can't see
what you're doing, or what happens when you do it, and your
non-descriptions provide no information other than "I'm unhappy."  I can
do practically nothing with "I'm unhappy."

Re: Firmware Update for R6400

I’m trying to update that version because when I attempt to update through login through router login. Net that is the version that it says it’s updating to.

Part of it is terminology because you made a point of several times focusing on my wording. Im trying to describe it the best I can. Was hoping maybe someone else had run into the same issue. I’ll figure it out on my own. Thanks for the link you provided. Hope you have a good weekend.

Re: Firmware Update for R6400

I’ve been able to complete the firmware update. The extractor finally worked.
