Firmware Upgrade

Firmware Upgrade

I just purchased this router and it works great, so far. My question is once I logged ito my account, it says there is a firmware upgrade for security issues. My version is V1.0.0.40 and the update is for version V1.0.0.48 suppose to fix security issues.  Is this a necessary update at this point? I have had issues on previous updates on other electronic devices and caused problems after the update. Any advise on this matter?

Re: Firmware Upgrade

I haven't heard of much for issues on the R6080's version of firmware.

You can do the update. If you do, for best results, I'd recommend doing it over a hardwired connection.

Re: Firmware Upgrade

It is always best to install firmware updates especially those that fix security issues.  You should do some research on that particular firmware to see if there are any reported issues after installing it.

That's the silliest thing I've read here in a long time.  And that's
saying something.

Take, for example, R7000 V1.0.10.90_10.2.90, which was so good that
it was withdrawn after about a day.

That makes more sense.  (Less silly than "always", at least.)

Re: Firmware Upgrade

Yeah, I did make a typo.  It should have read before installing the update you should check for issues.  Why didn't you just make a clarification without all the hyperbole.  Unfortunately, we can't all be perfect like you and never make a mistake.

   What was it?

A typographical error ("typo") is something like not putting a comma
between "updates" and "especially".  "Nonsensical advice" and
"typographical error" are spelled differently for a reason.

"hyperbole"?  With my weak psychic powers, I don't know what you
meant, only what you wrote.  In such a case, "clarification" is beyond
my ability.

Not a claim which I've ever made, but I try, at least, to be very
careful when throwing around words like "always".

Re: Firmware Upgrade

I admit I made a mistake by saying check for issues after the update that should have been before the update but I stand by my statement that it is always best to install firmware updates especially if they have security updates/fixes after doing the due diligence.

If there is an issue with a post you should make your own post with additional/correct information vs. attacking the previous poster.

Sorry, I didn't live up to your impeccable standards.

Have a great day.

Of course you do.  So, "it is always best", except when it's not?  I
would not call that valuable advice.

I stand by by criticism of the original (demonstrably false)
statement, including the cited counterexample.

> If there is an issue with a post you should make your own post with

   Did I not do that?

Where is this "attacking the previous poster"?  "the silliest thing
I've read" refers to the nonsense post, not the person who posted the
nonsense.  (Although an alert reader might make his own inferences.)
"criticism" and "ad hominem attack" are also spelled differently for a
reason.

   General advice: Grow up?

Sadly, that is impossible.

Your initial advice would have been a bit more palatable to less hostile observers with some recovery suggestions.

There is usually little harm in installing an update before you have done due diligence as long as you prepare for things to go wrong.

So before installing an update, create a backup of your configuration. Then, if you do have to backtrack, it takes no time at all to restore your sanity.

The reason for creating this backup is that some updates cause issues that go away after you have reset the device. That reset would wipe out all your carefully prepared settings.

So:

  • create backup and install the new firmware.
  • If nothing nasty happens, carry on.
  • If there are issues, reset the router.
  • If they go away, reconfigure and carry on.
  • If issues persist, reload the old firmware, restore the backup, carry on

This is in addition to the excellent advice from @plemans, use a wired connection to do the update.

Here's the usual advice on how to go about these things:
