Firmware Version 1.3.1.64 Update Ruined my Router

I received an email yesterday from NETGEAR Security about an "Important Firmware Update".  I followed the instructions and the installation should have taken "2 minutes" according to the on-screen prompts, but apparently stalled as I left if for several hours  and it never finished.  It warned me not to turn off or unplug the router during the update, but things were clearly not going as expected.  Now I have a boat anchor for a router.  It will not boot or factory reset and I've tried in vane to install the firmware using the tftp2.exe firmware upgrade tool.  My power light just flashes red.  I wish I hadn't installed the upgrade, but I needed the fix for the onboard Circle app which my kids quickly figured out could be disabled just by cycling the power (poor design).  You tricked me NETGEAR.  Well played!  You sent me an email invitation to ruin my router and I fell for it.  Now I'm out $200.

"tried in [vain]" is not a useful problem description.  It does not
say what you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As
usual, showing actual actions with their actual results (error messages,
LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations.

I'm guessing you did the update via WIRELESS too? Easy to drop the connection or have a sending problem. I don't know why NG suggests/allows you to do this. Wired connection is the best/safest way to do f/w upgrades.

You are probably a candidate for a few different things:

  • RESET button in the back of the router (recessed) holding it in with the power on until the LED's flash (but will not 'fix' a corrupted f/w load).
  • TFTP method (SEARCH here for instructions) but some do have connection problems with that process  as well.

Exact same thing just happened to me. Firmware update stalls, finally had to unplug, then wont reboot with a flashing red power light. TFTP transfer wont work.

Thanks netgear. Now I suppose I have to pay $50 for a service call as a result of a problem you caused?

Like "tried in [vain]", "won[']t work" is not a useful problem
description.  See "not a useful problem description [...]", above.

Perhaps whatever you did did not work, but the non-psychics in your
audience have no real idea what that might have been.  Or how, exactly,
whatever you did failed.

The TFTP recovery scheme is a multi-step procedure which offers
multiple opportunities for user input, hence user error.  See "as usual,
[...]", above.

My car "won't work".  What do you think the problem is?
