Firmware update

I got an email to update my R6400v2 (Nighthawk) firmware. I downloaded the Nighthawk app as suggested and selected update firmware. The app just spun round and round. Tried multiple times. Went to the older Netgear Genie app. Selected update. Got a message that said “Please wait while your router updates its firmware. This should take about a minute.” But then nothing happens. Tried multiple times. I have v1.0.2.52. Do I really need to update to .56, and if so, how can I get it to work?
