Firmware updates--check, do, when...?

R7300DST

Do you need to know your current version and then check periodically or is there some way to be automatically notified of an update to your date and model router?

How do you know when it's best just to leave well enough alone or there's really some important (to most users) change in the firmware?

Re: Firmware updates--check, do, when...?

When you log into the router it will show you when a update is available. If all is working fine then leave it be. Unless you have time and are knowledgeable enough to undo the update.

Many recent updates from NG add some option and end up breaking several others.

By FCC rule firmware change process is changing. Most important thing is it won't let

you go back down to older firmware soon. Think twice B4 updating firmware then.

Sounds like nitgear would finally have to ___t or get off the pot to stay in business.

A bit off the subject...

I'm trying to download the manual for the device. I've tried since yesterday. Each time a bllank pdf view loads and then the page times out. It may be Century Link crawling slowing down again or the site.

Would one of your mind checking for me? Here's the page:

Thanks, I'll just wait a day or two. It's less aggravating than India or whatever foreign land (reading a script) telling me it's my fault not (never) their system.

This is not my experience.

I have successfully upgraded and "downgraded" various Netgear modem/routers. (Sometimes an upgrade introduces new problems.)

Perhaps in depends on the hardware involved.

Re: Firmware updates--check, do, when...?

The FCC is talking about making WIFI firmware updates non reversible. They are even going after 3rd party also. The unlicensed wifi spectrum is being abused by users who modify the radio settings is my guess.

The world hasn't signed TTIP yet, which will give the likes of Microsoft and Apple the right to sue governments that upset them. Until that happens, those of us who do not live in Trumpland can safely tell the FCC where to shove its firmware updates.
