My desktop in the genie has the label Genie over it. I wanted to have desktop connected by cable. How do I make sure it is connected by wire and not wirelessly.

I understand none of that. What, exactly, is your "My desktop"? What, exactly, does "in the genie" mean to you? What, exactly, are you doing? At what, exactly, are you looking?
Ever helpful, Netgear uses the name "Genie" for more than one thing. Netgear routers have a web-browser interface called "Genie", and Netgear offers application programs for various computers/tablets/phones, which are also called "Genie". (I'd stick with the web-browser interface.)
As usual, showing actual actions with their actual results (error messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or interpretations.

Look at the network configuration of your "My desktop"? It might be easier to offer more detailed advice if anyone knew what your "My desktop" is.
What OS you running? Which 'Genie' are you using? Desktop or Browser?
If you look in Genie at the NETWORK MAP it would show you. If you look at the NETWORK PROPERTIES on your PC it would too.
Does your PC have both Wireless and Wired capability? Trace the wired cable and then if you suspect you are connected with it, disconnect it, that would tell you too.
