For the GS808E management, you can use a different single GbE connection - just do _not_ use the two aggregation ports on the R9000 (#1 and #2) and leave the two ports you intend to configure to a static LAG open. Unfortunately, Netgear has added to much UI "intelligence" requiring either both ports down, or both ports up on a GbE link.
We're using the second LAG available for configuration on the GS808E to connect a NAS in a static trunk with Blanced-XOR mode, too.
As Xavier already mentioned, you need at least the R9000 1.0.2.18 Beta (which does come with QoS) or the 1.0.2.30 released these days to enable the static LAG on the R9000 port #1 & #2:

I have it working without issues. Unit is attached to a synology nas416 unit which supports link aggregation (2 ports). Plugged in lan1 and lan2 and it is working with no further work.

Hi socalspartan
Sorry for the delay, could you check that you are using the latest R9000 firmware (1.0.2.30) as it's the one that we added Static LAG ( required to set up the lag on the GS808E)
https://www.netgear.com/support/product/R9000.aspx#Firmware Version 1.0.2.30
Moreover if you are already using the 1.0.2.30 please double check that the LAG is configured as a Static LAG otherwise the LAG will not work.
Hope it helps
