How to disable DNCP on the R7000 as Access Point

Hi, I am using the nighthawk router as access point on the first floor of my house with an additional wifi network. However, dhcp cannot be switched of and now it interferes with dhcp on the router on the ground floor (which is also the modem). Is there a way to shut-off dhcp on the nighthawk while being an access point? pls advise,

Can you set the router in Router mode and disable DHCP by unchecking the "use router as DHCP server" box?

You're doing something wrong. If you put the router in AP mode, DHCP should be automatically disabled (and a few other things as well). How did you put the router in AP mode?

Which model is it?  Look for "Model" on the product label.  Firmware
version?

Says who?  "cannot" is not a useful problem description.  It does
not say what you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.
As usual, showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results
(error messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.

It should be automatic/unavoidable, if you follow the instructions in
the appropriate User Manual.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look for a
topic like "Set Up the Router as a WiFi Access Point".

Re: How to disable DNCP on the R7000 as Access Point

Thx for responding so quickly, I use the web interface, tab advanced, advanced settings and then select AP. After doing that, the LAN and WAN settings are grayed out. And Even as AP, the router showes DHCP is on, next to the conflicts. Pls refer to attachment. Any advise what I can do otherwise?

   That sounds right.

That suggests that the firmware is defective.  Either DHCP is really
on, even with "Operation Mode: Access Point", or else the indication is
wrong, and DHCP is really off.

If you are sure that the R7000-as-wireless-access-point is your
second DHCP server, then I'd try a settings reset and manual
reconfiguration.  If that doesn't help, then I'd try a different
firmware version.

Not everyone's favorite.  The current consensus seems to be that
V1.0.9.42_10.2.44 is a better bet.  There's also a newer version.

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Downloads.  (For older versions, under Firmware and
Software Downloads, look for "View Previous Versions".)  Find the
kit(s).  Download the kit(s) you want.  Read the "Release Notes" file
for instructions.

Re: How to disable DNCP on the R7000 as Access Point

Hi Sensei, took some time, did a new manual setup, restored to the new and later ot the old version of the firmware but all no avail, still 2 dhcp servers in the network. Had the provider look into the network, saw the same. Like you said, must be a firmware problem. I guess , most using the nighthawk as ap use the modem as bridge but is not possible in my case. How can I approach netgear on this? any idea? Appreciate your support!

I believe that part.  What's not obvious is that the R7000-as-WAP is
providing one of them.

We're talking about Netgear router firmware, so many things
(including some amazing types of errors) are possible, but using an
R7000 as a WAP is pretty common, so, if there really were such a problem
with the R7000, then I'd expect to see many more complaints about it in
these forums.  Which I haven't seen.

It would be much easier to believe that you have some rogue device on
your LAN which is causing the trouble.

Blame assignment is Job One.  I'd disconnect all the devices (wired
and wireless) from the R7000-as-WAP, and verify that the problem still
exists.  Then I'd disconnect the R7000-as-WAP from the main router (or
power it down), and verify that that solves the problem.

Another diagnostic possiblity would be to monitor the network traffic
(Wireshark?), and see who is responding to a DHCP broadcast request, but
that might require more work.

Re: How to disable DNCP on the R7000 as Access Point

Many thx for your support in this. The solution was posted, have to disable while being a router before switching to WAP. Now DHCP is disabled, as also the screenshot shows. DHCP=uit (uit in dutch means off)
