Lag, poor range and drop outs

Absolutely disgusted in the modem router i paid top dollar for... It doesnt even have a strong signal for a modest 3 bedroom home. We are unable to get a stable wifi signal in the bed rooms a hallway away from the router. 
Is this a fault or just a terrible product?

Have returned the modem router and purchased something else that is working instantly with no issues. Full wifi strength through the whole house.

Don’t know if it’s just bad luck and I got a defective modem router or it really is super poor quality.
