Plugged in new router (Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 / model R6700v2) and hooked up to existing Arris DG1670 cable modem. Local wifi network disappeared, not found. Plugged/unplugged, rebooted.
Using 2010 MacBook Pro laptop. Is it too old to work with this router? Is the Arris modem too old or not compatible?

Manual automaticlly assumes I can connect to my network. I can't. Returning this. I always have problems with Netgear products. Will avoid completely from now on.

LEDS are on and white.
Did you configure the wireless network parameters on the new R6700v2?
Can this be done without connecting to Internet? (Using my old router now.) Because that's the problem.

Sure. There'd be a serious chicken-and-egg problem otherwise. To
configure your router, you need to connect to your router, not to the
outside world.
Step one: Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your model
number, and look for Documentation. Get the User Manual. Read. You
might be amazed at the benefits.

"can't" is not a useful problem description. It does not say what
you did. It does not say what happened when you did it. As usual,
showing actual actions with their actual results (error messages, LED
indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague descriptions or
interpretations.
You won't be able to connect to the new router using your old
wireless credentials (SSID, passphrase); you'd need to use the default
wireless credentials which are printed on the product label on the
router. As the User Manual explains.

Your choice, of course, but you're kidding yourself if you think that
any new router will be able to guess your old wireless network
credentials without your help.

From the limited information that you have supplied, it sounds like you just dived in without paying much attention to how you need to do these things. So there is a good chance that you will have the same issue with another router.
The first thing to note when replacing one router with another is that you need to reboot the whole network, otherwise the attached devices will be looking for stuff it saw thanks to the old router.
Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:
- Turn off and unplug the modem.
- Turn off the modem router and computers.
- Plug in the modem and turn it on. Wait 2 minutes.
- Turn on the modem router and wait 2 minutes.
- Turn on the computers.
Then, when you have got the local network up and running you can worry about wifi clients.
First you'll have to set up the wifi on the new router, with its SSID and passwords. You could recreate the settings from your old router so that wifi clients will think they are talking to the same network.
If you don't do that, you may have to work on the wifi clients to get them to talk to the new router, which may mean telling it to forget the old connection.
You may have returned the Netgear device, but anything you buy instead will require the same careful setup process.
