The router worked great for 8 months, but then lately there is a delay in connecting my Mac to the router. Also both the Mac and my iPhone frequently connect to a neighbor's unsecured router. And my Mac sometimes gives me a message that the stored password is incorrect for making the connection. It takes a minute of work-around to connect. 2 weeks ago I did pull the plug on both the router and the modem, but after the restart nothing has changed.

Glad it worked for you.
Properly designed firmware would not require a reset and reconfigure with an update. Suspect you have firmware update on which is the default. I suggest turning that off so you know when update is happening.
