Re: NG R7000 Firmware 1.0.10.90

  1. Read a very thorough thread from @dcrowmik
    https://community.netgear.com/t5/Nighthawk-WiFi-Routers/Netgear-R7000-Slow-Internet-Speed-Our-Fix-SO...
  2. Downgraded the firmware.
    From: V1.0.11.100_10.2.100
    To: V1.0.7.12_1.2.5 (download)
  3. Note:  In the tests below I had only 1 devide connected to the Cable Modem's 5G Wifi, and then the Nighthawk's 5G Wifi
  4. I connected to the Cable Modem's 5G Wireless, I get 313Mbps down and 12Mbps up
  5. I connected to the Nighhawk's 5G (UPnP and QoS were disabled by default

Results from the Nighthawk's 5G Wifi

  1. 1st SpeedTest:  62Mbps down, and 10Mbps up
  2. 2nd SpeedTest 200Mbps down, and 10Mbps up
  3. 3rd SpeedTest: 306Mbps down, and 11Mbps up
  4. 4th SpeedTest:  263Mbps down and 10Mbps up
  5. 5th SpeedTest: 280Mbps down and 10Mbps up
  6. 6th SpeedTest: 280Mbps down and 10Mbps up
  7. 7th SpeedTest: 220Mbps down and 10Mbps up
  8. 8th SpeedTest:  162Mbps down, and 10Mbps up
  9. 9th SpeedTest:  263Mbps down and 10Mbps up
  10. 10th SpeedTest:  253Mbps down and 12Mbps up

Downgrading the firmware improved my download speeds, but the Nighthawk (which is connected via ethernet to the cable modem) is still not performing at the consisten 300Mbps+ that I get from the Cable Modem's 5G Wifi.

45 minutes later...

I was down to getting 160Mbps down, and 10Mbps up15 minutes later I was getting only 62Mbps down, and 10Mbps up.  I'll watch it a little while longer to see if it comes back up before rebooting.

Rebooting seems to get me decent performance for about 2 hours, by the 3rd hour, I'm rebooting.

I've had this router for 4 years, so I'm disappointed, but I think I have no choice but to buy a new router.  Any recommendations for a wireless router that can handle a 300Mbps connection?

Re: NG R7000 Firmware 1.0.10.90

My mistake, I now see that I selected the 6900, but I have a R7000|Nighthawk AC1900 Smart WiFi Router

I appreciate any ideas that don’t involve throwing the router away Smiley Wink

Re: NG R7000 Firmware 1.0.10.90

Some have had good results with 3rd party firmwares on the R7000. Have you tried any of these?

Re: NG R7000 Firmware 1.0.10.90

I am now achieving 300 to 331Mbps Down and 10-12Mbps Up across my 300Mbps cable modem connectionon the Nighthawk's 5G connection (speed test results from my ISP, https://speedtest.tds.net/).

I'm pleased to report that DD-WRT worked for me.  Here's what I did, but be warned that you can brick your Nighthawk router by upgrading to a 3rd-party firmware like I did.  It's not that hard, but you should understand there is a risk.

Here's what I did

  1. Goto https://dd-wrt.com/support/router-database/?model=R7000_v1
  2. Download v3.0 [Beta] Build 40059
...the file will be downloaded as factory-to-dd-wrt.chk
  3. Upgrade the R7000 v1 (AC1900) to the DD-WRT firmware.
  4. Connect an ethernet cable from a computer to the R7000.
  5. Goto 192.168.1.1, default credentials are:
    admin
    password
  6. Once logged-in to the DD-WRT admin interfce, click the Wireless tab.
  7. Update the following settings on the Wireless Physical Interface for the 5 GHz/801.11ac interface (picture attached)
    Wireless Mode = AP
    Wireless Network Mode = AC-Only
    Wireless Channel = 149 - 5.745 GHz
    Channel Width = VHT80 (80 MHz)
    Extension Channel = lower lower
  8. Click Save, then Apply Settings
  9. Wait for the Router to Reboot, then run a speed test.

My results indicate that my Nighthawk R7000 Hardware is fine, but the current Netgear firmware is not enabling the router to achieve optimal performance.
