I want to install a VPN on my network. I was advised to install Tomato firmware on my router.
My first question is: Is my router compatibel with Tomato?
It indicates that it is compatibel with Netgear routers R7000 and R 8000. Does that mean that it is not compatibel with my R7800 or is it?
(I admit to be a complete ignorant about rouers, networks etc.)

Your title says R7000 but you have selected R7800 in product.
yes R7000 support but not R7800. As both are differet SOC. procy so the later wont support and it is different architecture altogether.
Hope this clarify the query. You can install vpn but using Custom firmware but alike stock from Voxel. Search on SNB forum
Its most updated robust firmware built for comunity.
