Netgear Nighthawk R8000 problemi col nat

My NightHawk x6 R8000 keeps assigning my devices with IP range 172.16.12.x which causes a no browse issue.  Not sure if it has anything to do with the WNR1000 (Xfinity Home Security) connected behind the R8000.  There is nothing I can do to the WNR1000 as Xfinity won't provide me with a username and password to log in.  Do I have to manually assign IP to all my devices in the range of 192.168.1.x or change the default gateway on R8000 to 172.16.12.1 to resolve the issue?

What do you have the R8000 connected to other routers and switches? or just the ISP modem? what modem do you have?

I have the Arris SB8200 modem connected to R8000 and the WNR1000 router connected behind the R8000. I could not put the WNR1000 in bridge or AP mode as Xfinity would not give me access to WNR1000.

And what purpose does this more-than-legacy WNR1000 have on your network?

The WNR1000 was put in by an Xfinity tech for Xfinity Home Security to work, that’s why I said they won’t give me access to that.

Afraid, this doesn't make sense to me - can't see that such a legacy device should be required https://www.xfinity.com/learn/home-security/devices

I also get this same issue, and have the xfinity sidecar router for the home security stuff. To fill in  schumaku, the WNR1000 is used when you either don't have internet with comcast, or don't want to use their modem/router combo. Since all the home security hardware is wireless, they just tag a bonus router onto your network to connect it all and use your internet for the primary connection to home base. There's a cellular modem from the home panel with an AC cord for use as backup.

For me, it isn't a huge hassle and only seems to affect some devices, ironically the "smarter" the device, the more likely to get a 172 address. Nanny cams and IoT devices I've never had a problem with, but my laptop and phone will get it often until I cycle the wifi.

I haven't actually tried to fix it, so if you get anywhere, let me know!

Guys,

I think @schumaku is on the right track...

Does the WNR1000 have a reset button?

Re: Netgear Nighthawk R8000 problemi col nat

@shadowsports It does, but it's probably a bad idea to use it. The WNR1000 is pre-configured to connect to the home security devices. If we reset it, we don't know the settings to get everything connected again. The link you sent is fine if we were using the WNR1000 for general purpose internet, but that's not the case in this situation. Basically, we're stuck with the WNR1000 as is and it can't be changed.

Connect no browse or can’t connect issue still happening to me twice a month. The only solution is to reboot the R8000 router.

Re: Netgear Nighthawk R8000 problemi col nat

@kenc1103 I'm currently trying to vlan bridge the WNR1000, and I haven't seen any issues so far. Maybe worth a shot on your end?

Note: this is not putting the router (R8000, or R6400 in my case) into bridge mode, which will kill the DHCP, this is under R8000/R6400 Advanced->VLAN/bridge settings like this: http://screenshots.portforward.com/routers/Netgear/Nighthawk_X4S_R7800/VLAN_Bridge_Settings.htm My understanding is this will connect the WNR1000 directly to the internet (but in a safer way than the DMZ hopefully) without going through the R8000/R6400 routing, so the DHCP from the WNR1000 shouldn't hit the rest of your devices. I have the WNR1000 plugged directly into the R6400, am using bridge mode, not tagging, and selected just the ethernet port connected to the WNR1000. Make sure you check the number on the back of the R8000 as the ports may be numbered right to left.

Re: Netgear Nighthawk R8000 problemi col nat

Just as a reference, this both did, and did not work. It did sucessfully isolate the comcast router from the network. However, as the modem does not offer an additional IP address, the comcast home router doesn't connect to the internet and comcast starts complaining.

My next attempt is to block traffic to the router via a static route

Re: Netgear Nighthawk R8000 problemi col nat

So the static route did seem to help with constantly connected devices, but not for intermittant devices. But, I think I found the solution. If you plug the cable going into the WNR1000 into the WAN port (internet port, the one separate from the other four, etc.) instead of one of the LAN ports, I still get broadband connection from the security system, and it doesn't put out DHCP on my home network. So, @kenc1103 try it!

Re: Netgear Nighthawk R8000 problemi col nat

I lost access to my Xfinity Home Security app after plugging the Ethernet cable to the WAN port of my WNR1000.
@bc2297 you sure you still able to control your Xfinity mobile app after doing that?

Re: Netgear Nighthawk R8000 problemi col nat

My Xfinity app works now after plugging the Ethernet cable to the WAN port of the WNR1000. Let’ see if it still assigns 172.16.12.x to my home network in the next coming days.
