I notice now when trying to access the routers settings it asks me for my user/pass, then seems to want me to create a NETGEAR Account.
Access how?
The best way in us with the browser graphical user interface (GUI) and a wired connection.
You can then skip the steps where the router tries to be "helpful". These things are designed for novices who need hand holding. But you can usually kick the "wizard" into touch. Just look carefully at the screens you see.

I apologize-I should've been cleared. I connected directly to the router (WiFi) by using a browser and navigating to its IP address (10.0.01)
It does the usual-prompt for user/pass. Then it loads some SSO script, checks for an internet connection & asks for a netgear account. I can take screenshot if neccessary.
But in short no I'm using a browser. No..I haven't-the administrator password? It's not the default but it's very simple. I'll look into that-thanks.
That would still require some communication from my router to netgear tho.

I bet its the router registration script that wants to have a NG profile to sign into and get the router registered to your NG profile. I see this happen as well after I setup a new router. After the setup wizard passes the check for FW updates, the next screen re-directs to the registration page and if you had a browser signed in to a NG profile, the script will add the router registration information to the NG profile for you.

How did you end up with that IP address?
It is often a sign that something else on the network has squaetted on the default address: 192.168.1.1
Always helps to deal with the obvious before going down a rabbit hole.
I wonder if the exotic explanations here – some of which don't relate to my "techno dim" experience – have missed one of the usual boilerplate questions.
It might help if you told people what modem sits in front of your router, if there is one. The model number could be useful. Is it, by any chance, also a router, with a set of LAN ports on the back?
The reason for asking is that a lot of people turn up here trying to put a router behind a modem that is also a router. That can complicate troubleshooting. It is also one reason why you end up with that IP address.
When you set it up, all that time ago, the process may have spotted something else on the network and adapted itself accordingly. The reset may have undone its good work.
