New: R7000 Firmware Version 1.0.9.14 Released 12/01/2017 - still broken!

Without any fanfare a new firmware has been released for R7000, it is 1.0.9.14. That is the good news. The bad news is IOS devices still have a capped speed of 40-45 Mbps. I have tested and confirmed this. I wanted to share a little bit of history in case it helps people in predicting future timeline.

1.0.9.6 - Released 07/04/2017 - Build date 06/16/2017
1.0.9.10 - Released 09/25/2017 - Build date 08/15/2017

1.0.9.12 - Released 10/09/2017 - Build date 10/03/2017

1.0.9.13 - Never released - Build date 10/20/2017

1.0.9.14 - Released 12/01/2017 - Build date 11/08/2017

For most 1.0.9.6 was the last full speed / stable build, some have had luck with 1.0.9.10 but not as many it seems. Now it appears that 1.0.9.14 finally has the WPA2 / KRACK fixes in it, but it isn't specifically stated.

On my PC and Netgear EX6200 via 5 GHz I am able to get full speed of my Internet connection of 240 Mbps, same as wired connection. This firmware may also fix some of the instability others were having. Give it a try. Just know IOS devices are capped. You probably don't need to download to your iPhone or iPad that fast anyway but it wasn't that way in 1.0.9.6.

Re: New: R7000 Firmware Version 1.0.9.14 Released 12/01/2017 - still broken!

One thing I have to say that is amazing about this router is its longevity. It started being sold in the Fall of 2013 over 4 years ago. It is still actively getting new features and firmware updates (although with issues). I think that is amazing since I have Enterprise products that sometime barely get that much support and I am paying yearly for support.

This router is still for sale too. That is the one reason I feel they will fix their firmware issues. If this product died 2-3 years ago it would just be trash now most likely.

If you think this firmware has issues install this one.

Re: New: R7000 Firmware Version 1.0.9.14 Released 12/01/2017 - still broken!

A correction to my first post and I wish I could change title of thread. It seems the IOS issue may be with the app I am using. For some reason the SpeedTest app has issues with 1.0.9.14 (but doesn't with 1.0.9.6?) however testing with SpeedSmart and Speedcheck app on IOS doesn't exhibit issue and I can get pretty close to full speed at around 200 Mbps. Maybe the firmware is good but has some issue with certain speed test apps?

Re: New: R7000 Firmware Version 1.0.9.14 Released 12/01/2017 - still broken!

I just upgraded.  I am mostly looking for a build which can run Circle wihtout dropping internet after a day.  On 1.0.9.12 I was able to get full internet speed (150Mbps) on my iPhone, so that isn't a problem I have seen.  But after a day of Circle running it would drop internet requests and get flaky and needed circle to be disabled.

I also found after a week I needed to reboot the router as it would get slower.... odd.

I also run QoS.

Here is hoping this one is better.

Re: New: R7000 Firmware Version 1.0.9.14 Released 12/01/2017 - still broken!

I have NOT has problems with SpeedTest by OOKLA on ANY F/W release with my iPad Pro. However, due to h/w on an iPad2/3 I rarely get above 40Mbps (I have 100Mbps down service). That is due the number of antennea's on some Apple phones and pads.

SpeedSmart... gets numbers all over the place, not the same even when run right after a test. Unreliable.

Testing speed over wireless isn't the best and a lot of things can change results. When you really need to check the speed you should use a wired connect and your ISP Speed test site. That site is on the ISP's network and takes out all the external 'things' that could slow you down.

I have found I think a solution for some of the speed issues. It appears the QOS DB is affecting things even when QOS is disabled. Here is my solution.

1. Enable QOS

2. Apply

3. Reboot when requested

4. In QOS Settings click Update Now button

Test speed?

5. Disable QOS

6. Apply

7. Reboot again

This fixed my IOS issues and others have said it fixes other speed issues. Can't explain why QOS DB is effecting speed when QOS is disabled but it is apparently?

Re: New: R7000 Firmware Version 1.0.9.14 Released 12/01/2017 - still broken!

Thanks,

I flashed my R7000 to 1.0.9.14, and did a cold reset of the router and did NOT enable QOS . On my android phone and tablets the download speed from Speedtest seemed to be capped at 44Mbs down while my PC was showing correctly at ~520Mbs down and ~580Mbs up.

I followed the steps to enable QOS (clicked update Database also ) and then disable QOS and now all speeds show correctly. Phone and Tablets now show around ~520Mbs down and 600Mbs up which is what I expect.

I had assumed since I never enabled QOS and did the cold reset it would have nothing to do with the slow speeds until I read this post.

Thank again!

-Brian

There is STILL no way to generate new VPN keys/replace the old ones.

What the hell, Netgear? It's like you don't give a crap.

The performance on this firmware stinks. I'm regularly dropped to sub 10Mbps speeds with lots of connection timeouts.

Why does your version of "progress" normally feel like a step backwards?

No problems at all with this new firmware.

I've actually upgraded my R7000's firmware 3 times since i bought it. Never experienced any problems.

Ended up flashing back to the previous version.  While my wired connection to the router was fine, boy did I experience joy with our wifi devices.  Suddenly following the firmware update the printer, my kid's computer and my wife's cell could not be found.  Tablets and blu ray players connection was unstable.  Moving back a version seems to have stablizied things.

Hoyt! Signed just to say thank you for following through on this bug! Netgear should be paying you! Called support and the outsourced support is worthless! Thinking of switching to ubiquiti.

Re: New: R7000 Firmware Version 1.0.9.14 Released 12/01/2017 - still broken!

I had to update to 1.0.9.18 an hour ago because also my old firmware version got the same problem again after 36 hours. I thought I had fixed it with an old V1.0.9.6_1.2.19 after flashing via the first FW ever. 3 resets and 3 old FW versions were not enough to make it it stable again.

I do not have the trust 1.0.9.18 is solving the 2.4GHz problem. I guess I have to buy a new router. Downtime is not acceptable anymore.
