I bought a new laptop. I have a desk top computer that has the Netgear software installed. I got the laptop connected to WiFi ok, but want to get rid of the desktop computer. If I disconnect the desktop computer from my network, will the WiFi still work? Do I need to install the Netgear software on the laptop? Do I need a new router?

the computer doesn't control the wifi. the router does. 

You can always log in through the browser, you don't need the genie software.
