Re: NightHawk R7000 dropping only 5G suddenly

NightHawk R7000 dropping only 5G suddenly

I have AT&T fiber 1G with AT&T HomeLink with Wi-Fi turned OFF.  Network connected to Night Hawk R7000.  Firmware installed is latest V1.0.11.106_10.2.100

Last night for no reason, suddenly 5G dropped,2 AT&T TV devices that were connected it it lost signal,  Also Amazon Alexa,  cell phones and MackBook

Could not log into NightHawk with Windows 10 desktop via Network cable and IP of 192.168.1.1 or RouterLogin.net.  Finally I opened a Windows 10 laptop and was able to log-in to Router with RouterLogin.net

In the NetGear menu, I  changed 5G channel from 147 to 161.  The 5G would show  , then few minutes later drop again

The 2G was stable all through out all of this

I have many things connected to the 2 G like Wifi Garage Door Smart Lights Thermomentor etc, that's why I want things needing faster connection on the 5G

Right now until this is solved, using the AT&T for AT&T TV and cell phones

5G on Nighthawk is disabled

This was purchased from Amazon May 16. 2020 for $109

2 things.

1. shutting off wifi, doesn't turn of the router in the att device. it causes a double nat. Not your issue with 5g but it is a double nat problem.

2. the r7000 isn't known for the best firmware. the agreed upon stable version is 1.0.9.42.  I'd try instalilng that version over a hardwired connection, then factory reset, and do a clean install (not from backup).

Re: NightHawk R7000 dropping only 5G suddenly

I'm assuming that you've provided your post as an informative one?

There are literally dozens of threads on this forum about firmware updates and the router subsequently dropping bands. It's one of the most widely reported new thread starts on an old problem that I've seen, I think?

What's more, your signature indicates you have a R7000P AC2300 ?  The latest firmware for this model I believe having looked at the Netgear documentation is 1.3.2.126

https://kb.netgear.com/000062478/R7000P-Firmware-Version-1-3-2-126

So which model do you actually have? R7000 AC1900 or R7000P AC2300 ?

Even if you confirm that you have the R7000 AC1900, I'd be surprised if you'll get the answers you need. The favourite answer to firmware issues with this model router, is to downgrade to a 3 year old firmware probably stacked full of security issues. If you want to do that, then that's your decision but not one that I would ever recommend to another user personally. Personally, I'm using the latest v.110 since it's release and for me that firmware is working absolutely perfectly.

https://kb.netgear.com/000062418/R7000-Firmware-Version-1-0-11-110

And so, if you do have the AC1900 and you are on v.106 firmware, then you're not on the latest.

So, as I say, you're not on the latest firmware according to your own post citing you are at v.106.

If you do upgrade, as has already been advised, do it over a hard wired connection. I have my own particular routine for upgrading firmware which involves disabling wi-fi before I start the process. I'm sure this isn't necessary, but it makes me feel better.

I also unplug anything else plugged into the router, leaving only the ethernet connection from my modem and my laptop connected to the router via ethernet cable.

I've disabled UPnP and I've disabled all logging due to multiple false DNS attack reports.

I don't have auto update on.

If you want to downgrade to a much older firmware, remember, it's at your own risk.

Rolled back the firmware to 42.10.2.44, and turned off auto updates,  So far 5G is solid

If you have the r7000, the version I'd recommend would be 1.0.9.42
