Nighthawk R7000 slow wifi speeds, same as N300

Hello everyone.  I am extremely confused and would appreciate any assistance.

My DSL package that I pay for is 100M download and 50M upload.  When my laptop is connected directly by the LAN cable, I am getting 93M download and 71M upload.

I recently purchased the Nighthawk R7000 to replace my Netgear N300, with hopes of improving my wifi speeds.  I tested the N300 before purchasing the R7000.  The N300 was showing 48M down and 47M up on wifi.  After I installed the R7000, I am basically getting the same thing... the best I have seen with the R7000 is 52M download.   I know wifi will be slower than wired, but I thought I would get somewhere closer than the old N300 I was using.  I searched the forums and the web for solutions, and I have tried everything that I have seen; updating the firmware, reseting to factory defaults, changing channels, and clearing upstructions. Nothing changed.  I tried calling Netgear, but that was a waste of time.  My laptop is literally about 2ft from the router, but my laptop is old.  I tried my wife's laptop downstairs away from the router, and the speed is the same.  Unfortunately, I don't know what else to do at this point.

Can anyone tell me if I am overlooking something or if there is anything in the settings that I need to change to get me closer to the what I am paying for when using wifi?  I am trying to make sure I cover everything and rule out everything before I go back to using my N300 and return the R7000 to get my $175 back... if the speed is virtually the same with both.

Thank you for any assistance/advice you can give me.

@IrvSp and @StephenB

Thank you for the information and the assitance.  It was greatly apprecaited and it definetly helped me out.  It is definetly my laptop and my wifes laptop that is not able to connect right.  I removed the "smart connect" and now I can seperate whether i am connecting 2.4 or 5.  I played around with testing the difference on my iPhone since it can connect to either 2.4 or 5.  When I connect 2.4 and run the test... I am getting 45-50M download and 30-35M upload.  When I connect 5 and run the test... I am getting 100-105M download and 90-95 upload.

Thank you again for your assistance!

Re: Nighthawk R7000 slow wifi speeds, same as N300

Sort of sounds like a wireless problem, and most likely due to the devices WIRELESS adapters...

So please post the specific device models and since probably built-in, the laptop models, along with the OS's being used.

Also the settings for the SSID you've been using, like Security and channel/mode. Is 20/40 MHz Coexistence enabled? Speed used, N or AC, would help.

I do know iPad's and iPhones in particular generally can't reach top N or AC speeds due to insufficient antennea's.

It does sound like the problem is your wireless devices vs. the router's as both behave the same way. Either that or you've setup both router's incorreclty. Without more data it is hard to pinpoint the culprit here.

I do know there is a difference between the 'connection' speed and 'actual' speed on wireless devices. 'Actual' is the real speed that is the rate data transfers... and can be significantly lower than what the connection speed is.

A couple things to add to @IrvSp's list:

Are the clients connecting on the 5 Ghz band or the 2.4 Ghz band?

Many laptop models have options to upgrade the wifi module, so the laptop model itself often won't tell you much.

In the case of windows laptops, also look in the windows device manager, and see if that gives you a model for the wifi client.

Re: Nighthawk R7000 slow wifi speeds, same as N300

Thank you @IrvSp and @StephenB for the replies.   I agree with your comment, I definetly think it is something I have configured wrong in the router, since it is causing every device I have to show pretty much the same speed when on WiFi.  But... I am no computer specialist or guru.

The devices that I am testing my wifi speed on are as follows; HP Pavilion 7G laptop running Windows 7, Toshiba Satelite C55 laptop running Windows 8, and my iPhone 6 plus .

The Router info is as follows;

Wifi Setup tab

2.4GHz

Smart Connect - enabled (I have swapped this to disabled also... no difference)

SSID Broadcast - enabled

20/40 MHz Coexistence - enabled

Channel - auto (I have tried swapping it to 4, 7, 11.. no difference)

Mode - Up to 600 Mbps

Transmit Power Control - 100%

Security - WPA2-PSK [AES]

5GHz

SSID Broadcast - enabled

Channel - 153

Mode - up to 1300Mbps

Transmit power Control - 100%

Security - WPA2-PSK [AES]

Firmware - 1.07.6_1.1.99 (tried installing 1.04.3 like another post suggested, no difference)

Clients connecting 2.4 or 5 -  appears 2.4GHz

Device Manager / Network Adaptor for the HP Laptop - Ralink RT5390 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Adapter

I hope that is the information you are asking for.  Please forgive my ignorance, I am decent with computers, but not with networks/wifi/etc.  Thank you both again for your assistance.  I greatly appreciate it.

Use non-overlappig channel 1,6,or 11 for 2.4ghz. Also, confirm WMM is enabled on the router..

Re: Nighthawk R7000 slow wifi speeds, same as N300

Well, you do have h/w that is NOT helping you. The spec's for the Ralink RT5390 802.11 b/g/n WiFi Adapter shows 150Mbps MAX. for that card. Not the fastest in the world, most N speed adapters are at least 300Mbps and some are 450Mbps. Max. speed and usually is fairly close to the CONNECTED SPEED. If you open the STATUS for the card in the NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER's CHANGE ADAPTER tab on the left and RMB and select STATUS you'd probably see the 150Mbps connections speed. To do this under Windows open the CONTROL PANEL and select the NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER and do the above.

That said, the speeds you are seeing would be generally what you'd get with a 150Mbps wireless cart.

You probably don't need SMART CONNECT either. That just switches you between the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands (SSID's are the same as are Passphrases) depending which is a stronger signal. I'd stay with N Speed 5Ghz SSIF if you don't have a connection problem, less chance of interference.

What you might try is find  a local store like Best Buy, Office Depot, or Staples, and get a true N Speed 300Mbps USB Network Adapter. They are fairly cheap, and Amazon has many, but returns could be a problem. The brick and mortar stores might no be a problem and have no return fees.

I suggest looking at the 802.11ac adapters.

Well, not knowing what is in the C55, it could very well be a 150Mbps adapter too. Follow the instructions to see the STATUS and connection speed I mentioned in my other reply on that laptop.

iPhone, well it depends on the number of Antennea's it has. My old iPad 3 didn't have enough and I was lucky to get 1/3 of my ISP connection on it. My iPad Pro has more antennea's and connects at the FULL ISP speed. I'd suspect the iPhone 6S is not a good measure for speed,

Yes, indeed, I didn't mention that as the price goes up. The card OP referenced is an internal card, and I even saw one (cheap) with 300Mbps speed but it also clearly said not for HP's (and other laptops, wonder why?). This of course assumes there is a spare USB port as well.

No help for the iPhone though.
