Nighthawk R7000P questions

HI,

New provised in my area is bringing in Fiber Optic and I have been given a list of routers to use. My home is 2 stories and is 2250SF. From everything I can read, this will work fine on my home. Any thoughts on it? We do not do any gaming.

And don't laugh, will I need a modem with this unit or is this usually provided by the internet service supplier?

Thank you.

It's beyond "iffy".  Netgear Cxxxx models lack an Ethernet
WAN/Internet port, which makes them useless as routers except with a
cable-TV ISP.  (Hence "Rxxxx", above.)

I don't follow this stuff closely enough to recommend particular
devices, and I have no idea on what your ISP bases its recommendations.
I also don't know how fast your fiber service would be.  The R7000P is
not a very recent model.  You might search these forums for any model
number to see what kinds of complaints it generates.

I'd explore more broadly.  If your ISP recommends any Netgear Rxxxx
model, then practically any router (but not a cable modem+router) should
be compatible.  Maker, performance, features, and cost are variables
which you'll need to juggle.  Presumably, a search of this new Inter-Web
thing could find reviews of various routers.  Or someone else might
suggest something(s) here.

With my weak psychic powers, I can't guess who that ISP is, or what's
on that list.  Is the R7000P on it?  What is?

That depends on what sort of equipment your ISP is providing.  This
might seem radical, but did you try asking your (unspecified) ISP what's
required?

Re: Nighthawk R7000P questions

HI,

The provider is Yadtel, have you heard of them? Small group out of NC.

The list provided has a dozen or so suggestions and this was one of them.

Apparently a modem is not needed with Fiber Optic service. At least thats what I have read so far.

Other units listed were the Netgear RAX10 and a Arris Surfboard Max Pro.

I am trying to stay under $200

Apparently my currect AC1900 is a no go with Fiber Optic service per this provider.

Nope, but if they don't know which equipment you need, I'd be amazed.

It depends.  Some providers run fiber to the premises, and provide an
ONT with an Ethernet port for direct connection to the router.  Some run
fiber to some curb-side cabinet, and use coax or DSL for the last link
segment, in which case you'd need a suitable modem.

Hence the suggestion to ask the ISP.

"AC1900" is a speed, not a model number.  Look for "Model" on the
product label.

"Apparently"?  Not apparent to me.  Without knowing what it is, I
wouldn't try to guess at its compatibility, but I'd expect any Rxxxx
model to work about as well as another, at least as far as basic
functionalty goes.  One might be faster (in various ways) than another,
but, if all you need is a router, and whatever you have was satisfactory
before, then I'd run the experiment before going on a shopping spree.

Re: Nighthawk R7000P questions

Antinode,

The AC1900 unit I have is a model C7000v2. Could it possibly work with fiber optic or is it "iffy" and best to go with a unit on the new providers list?

The new provider does offer a list of fiber optic routers that they recommend and the local rep stated to lean towards the Netgear units (which I largely use already). On the list were a RAX 10 and the R7000P and one more Netgear unt that was out of my price range and most likely overkill for my 2250sf home.

Thanks for any suggestions or advice.
