I just purchased this router and can get it to connect to the Internet only if I run the ether net cord to my old router. It will not connect if I plug it into my modem directly. I have powere everything down and restarted the modem and router and it still will not connect unless ran through the old router. How can I make this connect without my old router?

What modem are you using? Thats kind of key here.
Many times its a modem/router combo device for the modem. This can cause a double nat.
Current setup: CAX80->Trendnet TEG-S380->GS716T-> RBK752->pi-hole 1.4gig download/50mbps upload We’re members of the public helping out on our own time.
New install requires doing things in the correct sequence.
1 power off modem and router.
2 power up JUST the modem and let it stablize, normally around 5 minutes.
3 power up the router.
You should now have the router connected to the Internet. Reason for this sequence is the modem needs to forget about the old router so that it can talk to the new one so this is kinda of a reset for the modem. However, the modem must be fully up before the router is brought up.
Ok, I have powered them all down. Restarted the modem, waited 30min, plugged in the router, and it still will not connect. The lights turn on, but the Internet light stays orange, not white and the app says it's not connected.
I have a Motorola surfboard SB5101u, I've had it for some time. Is it possible that needs to be upgraded too? I only connected the new router up to the old one to see if it worked that way, to try and troubleshoot. I don't understand why it will only work when connected this way. When I power everything down, let the modem start up, then connect the new router in, the Internet light on the new modem turns orange, not white.
What speeds do you pay for? that is a quite old modem. It should still connect but its nothing to brag about for a modem. And its a docsis 2.0 device with a max speed of 38mbps.
A modem upgrade should be considered in the future

well that modem is capable of 5mbps. I didn't even know they still offered 5mbps over cable. that's usually a speed over dsl.
that modem was originally manufactured in 2004.

Alright, well I don't know then. I'll just run it through the old router. I did the speed test on the nighthawk app and it says I'm getting 4.97 megs, so it has to be working

Ok, if I start having other issues I will look into that. Right now everything seems to work fine. I'm the only one running off the faster router, everyone else in the house is on the older slower router...
