Nighthawk R7800 1.0.2.80 firmware issue

I just updated my router to firmware version 1.0.2.80 through the Nighthawk app today and now my router restarts on its own every few hours. I did not have this issue with 1.0.2.78. I shouldn't have updated to this new firmware. Is anyone else having this issue? The last time it restarted my 5ghz channel would not even show up and everything I had connected to the 5ghz could not connect. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and then the 5ghz showed back up. I'm waiting to see if it keeps restarting. Should I roll back to the 1.0.2.78 version? This version is apparently broken....at least for me.

Re: Nighthawk R7800 1.0.2.80 firmware issue

Thanks for replying. I just unplugged it and I'm no longer using it. I'm using my Verizon G3100 now for my wifi. It works better and has no issues. Too bad that Netgear can't do updates without messing stuff up.

Re: Nighthawk R7800 1.0.2.80 firmware issue

I have the router in AP Mode as well I experience the same problem. I've tried many things and do a lot of search. My 2 cents:

Updating to 1.0.2.74, 76, 78 and 80 introduces a bug leading to random reboots. This happens several times per day. Today, the only way back I have to get back an stable devices is by reflashing a previous 1.0.2.74 firmware (1.0.2.68 for example).

Also, I tried the well-known Voxel's custom firmwares, but they have the same behaviour on those versions based on Netgear's 1.0.2.74 onwards.

From Voxel's, I just tested 1.0.2.80SF and 1.0.2.81.1SF versions. The Voxe'ls 1.0.2.79SF works fine (dated from 23/07/2020 which is based on Netgear's 1.0.2.68).

P.S.: Netgear, please test before publishing updates supposed to improve a product. Some of us use this router with a professional purpose.

This is not an isolated case. Just do a search on the Internet.

Please mind this message and ignore my previous one, which I cannot delete or edit.

Re: Nighthawk R7800 1.0.2.80 firmware issue

1.0.2.80 works for me in AP mode. So did 1.0.2.76. Never tried .78, Been up steady for five days, but I will watch it.

I'm not saying you're not having the issue, but it does work for some people.  Perhaps try some of my settings below and see if one of them makes a difference.

I download the update and perform the update in the GUI using an Ethernet connection.

I then hold in a paperclip in the back for 15 seconds and let the device reboot.

I set it up manually in AP mode - using a fixed IP address, not DHCP.

My other options are:

- use the WAN port for the connection to my router

- no DFS channels

- no Smart Connect

- Beamforming on

- no MU-MIMO

- no HT160

- no Media Servers

Re: Nighthawk R7800 1.0.2.80 firmware issue

Thanks for the reply. Let me know how it works out. That last firmware update really screwed up my Nighthawk router. I've just been using my Verizon G3100 router and have had zero issues so far with the same coverage my Nighthawk had.
