Hi my router worked well after the last firmware update some months ago. Firmware V1.0.4.12_10.1.46 . Then about 10 days ago it has started disconnecting very frequently and repetitively, and reconnecting and disconnecting etc.... I see no log about the disconnect /reconnect in the router log . Only Genie shows no internet connection. I thought it was attacks but the logs don't show attacks at the same time. Internet frequently comes back after few minutes and falls ago few minutes later. My provider says it sees nothing. But has a visit scheduled this weekend. Earlier this afternoon internet did completely go off for a while and would not come back by itself for many minutes. The modem (provided y the provider ) then had the online led off. I resetted(turned off and on) the modem and it worked after many / multiple resets. The provider also resetted it. as I was on the phone with it. When restarting the router the internet reconnection appeared on the log. Could it appear every time I get disconnected? What could the problem be? how to fix it? Thanks!

Hi, thanks James. I did install it earlier today.
I imagine that it must be related to the security issues in the news.
supposed to allow auto update of the firmware too.
Hopefully all goes well and keeps hackers at bay.....
But also this morning I had the visit of my 3rd technician and I am hopeful it is going to be finally working well.
First technician did some connections tightening and changes and changed my modem to another thomson. Not better five minutes after he left
I went to mediacom shop the next day to get another modem, arris, better.
2 days later second technician was helpful finding out and telling me there was a capacity problem sometimes (that appears in logs at the provider) and that he was going to ask to be looked at.
Then nothing happened during 2 weeks and still internet often bad.
No news about capacity increase when I was asking and it did look like problem was still too present to be only that.
Called and complained last week and Surprise: Third technician rings at the door this morning today.
I think he did a good job, very methodical, replaced some cables that were dammaged from ?rabbits, checked every connection and splitter. changed several. Noticed also I was using a ethernet cable from modem to wifi that was maybe a limiting factor in the speeds and not related to the drop we think
Very happy with him. Very hopeful. No issue for the last 12 hours and I saw the firmware and updated.
So modems might be more or less performant with a bad signal but I think 2 main factors to my problems have been
-coax dammaged and connections loose or deficient (hopefully all fixed for the moment)
-maybe capaicity
To have an increased capacity provider must do increase of capacity and it might not happen soon but I will be challenging them if problem
Also I have a 8 channel modem, might go and buy a 16 channel one. Hearing it could help.
If I think about the technicians I have had,I have seen others and none was as professional as the one today I think and I had given up on a TV problem (frozen frames) on TV for the last 2 years, getting worse last 2 moths while internet also underwent issues leading to this post.
Will check whether it improved or still happens.
Pretty thankful to the technician of this morning also I have learned a lot thanks to talking to them and this chat. Thankful to this chat too.

Power cycling, the process you described, is not the same thing as a full factory reset.
New firmware sometimes introduces changes that are not compatible with the old configuration.
So while it isn't guaranteed to fix problems a factory reset is the first thing to try if you have issues with new firmware.
There is a manual for the R8000 somewhere at the end of this link:
>>>>> R8000 | Product | Support | NETGEAR <<<<<
See pages 11 and 189.
This is nuisance because you then have to reconfigure the device all over again. (Trying to restore a backup configuration can just bring the bug back from the grave.) But it has rescue many a victim from the symptoms you describe.

Re: Nighthawk X6 - Model R8000 INTERNET repetitive disconnects with no log
If you do have Internet up, most Modems can be accessed at 192.168.100.1 and do not seem to have access controls or if the do use ADMIN and PASSWORD for entry to view the modem status and logs. You might find some info there at to who is going down or causing the router to lose connection. If that doesn't work, Google "xxx modem 192.168.100.1 username and password" and change 'xxx' to the make of your ISP modem.

Re: Nighthawk X6 - Model R8000 INTERNET repetitive disconnects with no log
As in most of these things, when talking about routers it would help if we knew what the modem is. Simply saying "provided by the provider" could be anything.
In my case, 192.168.100.1 gets me nowhere. Nor would I expect it to. (It is a modem-router on modem only mode.)
Would a modem show up on the router's map of attached devices?

@michaelkenward, I've got an Arris TG1672G from my ISP. It is a bridged modem/router/eMTA unit. It does work for me... see JPG attached.
No, the MODEM does NOT show on the router or as an attached device.
My router is at 192.168.1.1, and I can PING both it and the modem:

Re: Nighthawk X6 - Model R8000 INTERNET repetitive disconnects with no log
Thank you. I am going to have the factory reset as last alternatve. I did it in March when having internet completely disconnected and doing firmware update . After that it worked for several weeks well. Why suddenly it would not work? Maybe some provider issues that I would like to pinpoint. But factory reset is an alternative to try at some point. Thanks.

Re: Nighthawk X6 - Model R8000 INTERNET repetitive disconnects with no log
Check on the Modem to see if there are any entries in the STATUS or CONNECTION... I don't know what you can see, but sometimes you can see things like Internet disconnect or the modem rebooting or other things in the log like T3 timeouts. All of those would basically disconnect the Internet or if nothing more slowdown your usage of the Internet. Also, if you see the channels that are used you should see Correctables and Uncorrectables. Very high counts should not be seen for these. If you do, it could be line problems.

I am going to wait until internet drops again to access the router logs (Through routerlogin.net ) at at the same time my Modem logs (at 192.168.100.1)
Currently I am not sure there are problems. but I took prints for a baseline .
also wondering about the obsolescence of this modem.

Re: Nighthawk X6 - Model R8000 INTERNET repetitive disconnects with no log
The MTA is really eMTA, your phone part of the modem. A reset though could mean a drop. Hard to tell because they are out of order (Index is not in order and it appears some are missing?).
When you know it has dropped, check the modem and see if anything happened at that same exact time? Usually when the modem drops your router log, if you have Automatic Connection Reset checked, will show in the router log. If the time is close, the ISP should probably replace the router or check your line for problems.

Re: Nighthawk X6 - Model R8000 INTERNET repetitive disconnects with no log
Looking at the router logs I see some disconnects log but this is one only while internet was done 20-50 micro times.
example last eveining once disconnect
[Internet connected] IP address: XXXXXXX, Thursday, May 03,2018 20:20:39
[Internet disconnected] Thursday, May 03,2018 20:20:39
[Initialized, firmware version: V1.0.4.12_10.1.46] Thursday, May 03,2018 20:20:38
example last aftertnoon no disconnect but proof the internet was not available as the mailing of the log failed
[email failed] fail to resolve outgoing mail server, Thursday, May 03,2018 16:01:30
problem is that if I powerdown the router I lose the logs
lookig in my email of the last days I find some dicsonnects but not moer than once a day
except a weird one at 3am the ip address of the connection was 192.168.100.10 ??????
[Time synchronized with NTP server] Thursday, May 03,2018 03:01:32
[Internet connected] IP address: xxxx19, Thursday, May 03,2018 03:01:32

Re: Nighthawk X6 - Model R8000 INTERNET repetitive disconnects with no log
T3 and T4 time outs can be a problem, again, especially if you see Internet drops at the same time they happen.
First read this data, https://volpefirm.com/docsis_timeout_descriptions/ which describes the different T's...
Next look at my JPG's from my modem. See those 5/2 0:32AM entries, well my Router log has a matching entry:
[Internet connected] IP address: 192.168.100.20, Wednesday, May 02,2018 00:33:04 [Internet connected] IP address: 192.168.100.20, Wednesday, May 02,2018 00:32:54 [Internet connected] IP address: 192.168.100.20, Wednesday, May 02,2018 00:32:44 [Internet connected] IP address: 192.168.100.20, Wednesday, May 02,2018 00:32:25
When the router can't get an IP Address, that is what you should see... and in the case here the ISP dropped the signal for a long time as the service was upgraded.
If the modem is sent to REBOOT mode it can take up to 2 minutes even and you'd see 20 entries like the above. If it is a SHORT interruption however you'll not see it, like a T3 problem (it doesn't always cause the modem to drop the signal, and if it does, it usually tries immediately and then it is so fast the router doesn't notice it.
Me, I'd call your ISP and tell them you see T3 and T4 timeouts on their modem and see what they say? They can usually see the same thing and other back end data and might be able to help.

I assume you are getting the DNS from your ISP then. This again is a problem on the ISP's end. Either the DNS went down or your connection to is somehow?
On the ADVANCED tab in the Internet Connection box you'll see 2 or 3 DNS IP Addresses. Those might have gone down, or a situation where the ISP was in the process of moving your SMTP server to a new server and was updating the DNS's? If it continues to happen, those entries should show that it is an ISP problem, not the IP Address that was having the problem, 192.168.100.10, that is one the modem.

From the few Google hits I can find that looks like a modem/router to me. (Does it have a row of LAN ports on the back?)
If so, now that you can see it in a browser, maybe it can tell you which mode it is in. If it also acts as a router you may need to see if it will do modem only mode to avoid confusion with the R8000.
@IrvSp knows all about that too.

Re: Nighthawk X6 - Model R8000 INTERNET repetitive disconnects with no log
@NGbaby, at this point you might have 2 problems... as @michaelkenward noted, your modem is a combo unit. Both a modem and router, as well as an eMTA. When you look at the MODEM, you might be able to determine IF the ROUTER function (Wireless) is turned on or not? Sometimes that can only be seen by the ISP though with proper access rights or UID and PW?
If the MODEM is not bridged, it will be putting out a wireless signal, and quite likely conficting with and causing interference with the R8000's Wifi signal. If you can't tell or don't know if it is bridged, call your ISP and ask. However that has NOTHING to do with the problem your reported. That appears to be an ISP line issue.
The 2nd problem is the iPhone. It is a 'problem' associated ONLY to wireless. I think it has to the device trying to ensure it still has a signal? My wife's PC is wireless and I see MANY like this in the log:
[DHCP IP: (192.168.1.40)] to MAC address 08:BD:43:A5:8C:AA, Sunday, Apr 29,2018 16:38:29 [DHCP IP: (192.168.1.40)] to MAC address 08:BD:43:A5:8C:AA, Sunday, Apr 29,2018 16:38:11 [DHCP IP: (192.168.1.40)] to MAC address 08:BD:43:A5:8C:AA, Sunday, Apr 29,2018 16:37:40 [DHCP IP: (192.168.1.40)] to MAC address 08:BD:43:A5:8C:AA, Sunday, Apr 29,2018 16:37:18 [DHCP IP: (192.168.1.40)] to MAC address 08:BD:43:A5:8C:AA, Sunday, Apr 29,2018 16:36:42
It comes and goes, but when I see it, it always in bunches. My iPad's and other wireless devices DO NOT do this? It has ALWAYS happened, even when I had the R7000 connected. NEVER discovered why? For instance the 5 above were alone, other times only 2 to 4 and sometimes many more. Not sure why, but there doesn't appear to be any harm from that? I just ignore it.

You probably never set the TIMEZONE as it defaults to the west coast of the US. Go to the ADVANCED tab, open SECURITY, select SCHEDULE, and you'll find the setting on the bottom of the page.

Don't know WHO your ISP is, but they usually have a list of ALLOWED modems. I have Spectrum and they have limited models they allow. Many might not be good for you as they are not even DOCSIS 3.0 or do NOT support the Internet speed you have.
Some ISP's you rent the modem from, usually with a monthly charge around $5. Buying your own modem will save that but an $80 modem will take 14 months to get the payback on the modem... and during that time a few things can happen. Modem failure for any reason, just going bad, or even a lightning strike or power surge, and you'd be buying another (if that happened with the ISP's modem they replace it free). Add to that either a possible speed increase or going up to Docsis 3.1. Either of those happen and you'd need to buy a new modem. My ISP is making noise about bringing in FIBER for instance, and that would require a modem switch. I just had an announced speed increase, and depending on modem model, that too might have caused me to get a new modem. Next thing to consider is PUMA 6! Might be over your head, but that chipser is on MANY modems today. That can have SEVERE lagging (really causes games problems) and basically gets worse with IPv6 which also can happen soon for many ISP's.
Do you really want to own your OWN modem?
