Nighthawk X6S R8000P AC4000 USB Access Control does not work correctly since upgrade to 1.4.0.10_1.2

Hello,

Since the last firmware upgrade I made 3 days ago to firmware version 1.4.0.10_1.2.14 the Access Control is no more working correctly.

In the lists of the Access Control, connected and not connected lists show nonsense information.
Some devices that are connected are shown as not connected and other ones that are not connected are shown as connected

I rolled back to the previous firmware version 1.3.0.10_1.2.2 and all is working fine again.

Am I the only one with this issue?

Hello,

Netgear finally made a new firmware that is working just perfectly!

All previous issues have been solved.

Firmware Version V1.4.1.24_1.2.20

GUI Language Version V1.4.1.24_2.1.46.1

Very good, but next time please make more tests before releasing new firmware versions.

Did you reset the router to factory settings after the firmware flash?

New firmware sometimes introduces changes that are not compatible with the old configuration.

So while it isn't guaranteed to fix problems a factory reset is the first thing to try if you have issues with new firmware.

This is a nuisance because you then have to reconfigure the device all over again.

You can backup your settings before you reset and restore them later. But that may just bring back the fault. Then again, at least you will know if the reset fixed the problem.

Hi michaelkenward,

Thank you for your answer.

I will try the reset solution during this weekend, and check it the Access Control issue will be solved.

Maybe this solution could also solve the problem with the USB disk I had after the upgrade. The disk was no more available, in both USB ports of the router.

For the moment, the downgrade has has made the router work correctly again.

Could be. These things are all tied together.

Re: Nighthawk X6S R8000P AC4000 USB Access Control does not work correctly since upgrade to 1.4.0.10

Hi michaelkenward,

I tried to make the reset to manufacturer settings 3 times.

First time importing the old settings.

Second time without importing old settings and plugging the external USB disk.

Third time without importing old settings and set them manually.

Well, unfortunately, no way for the router to "see" the external USB disk and the Access Control List, once completed, showed wrong information about connected and non-connected devices.

Thank you anyway for your suggestion, I had to try.

This is quite disappointing coming from Netgear, as this, in my experience, is the first time a router firmware upgrade from Netgear causes so many issues.

Thank again for your help and have a nice weekend.

I am having the same issue as well, the router works fine after downgrading, interesting note is that the USB devices are powered up once I plugged them in.

OK. That rules out the reset thing.

It may feel dangerous to roll back to earlier software, and its promise of security updates, but many of those fixes deal with rare events, some of which have never been seen in the wild.

So while it would be unwise to advocate ignoring these fixes, you might like to balance the risks against the features that you lose with the new firmware.

Netgear never says what a security fix deals with – that would be useful information for villains – but you can get an idea of what is currently worrying the security people by consulting Netgear's security pages.

Re: Nighthawk X6S R8000P AC4000 USB Access Control does not work correctly since upgrade to 1.4.0.10

I do agree, therefore I rolled back to the previous firmware version.

Access Control is part of the security system of a router, and after the update it did not work properly anymore. I think Netgear should take it into account. I am not totally incompetent about this, I worked on computer security for more than 20 years, and still do, and I really care about security, especially because my work is copyrighted, so it is understandable I do care about security.

Regarding the USB devices, I made an investment in my USB backup disk, for the reasons I explained before. So, I do not agree that to get more security from the router manufacturer, the firmware update makes the router not recognise anymore a USB device. What the solution should be? To buy another one? And if the new one has the same problem after the new future firmware update, or even does not work at all with the current version? The compatibility list from Netgear is more than approximative.

In a normal condition a firmware update should be compatible with the older devices, especially if those devices have been commercialised less than 1.5 years ago. And, the Security Access Control service should work properly even after a firmware update.

When I bought this router, I have chosen it for what it had, for the technical features, and the manufacturer is supposed to make firmware updates that do not disrupt what the product did before.

All this is supposed to be Netgear responsibility, not to the customer.

I am not sorry to be so direct and maybe a bit rude, but I am quite sick of all these errors after updates, whether for a router or a computer or something else.

Yeah, there is still not a single version that is completely bug free, on both versions I still have to turn off remote access to download my VPN certificates.

Hard drives still only work on 1.3.0.10, the new firmware does not solve it, only fixes the connected devices page.

You are totally right!

At the beginning it seemed this problem was solved, but not at all.

The Security - Access Control is just a big, enormous mess.

So, we are still waiting for you Netgear!

YOU, NETGEAR, MUST SOLVE THE PROBLEM YOU CREATED WITH YOUR UPDATES.

We are customers, indeed clients, and paid for the product, including the fact it must work properly.
