One Wired Connection Creates Internet Solid Amber Light

I have a R6700v2 that is driving me up the wall. This morning, I received a solid amber internet light after 13 months of no issues (conveniently 1 month ouside of the warranty window). I found that all of my wired and wireless devices were down.

After confimring with Spectrum and TP Link that it was not caused by the ISP or the modem, respectively, I started removing my wired connections from my router. I noticed that when I remove one of three wired connections from the router, the internet light turned white and internet was flowing to both the other wired device (a Phillips Hue) and my wireless devices.

When I plug in the other wired connection, which is connected to a switch that powers 7-8 devices in my media console, the internet light turns a solid amber and all the wired and wireless devices fall.

Things I've tried:

  • I've tried connecting that ethernet cable to every single port to see if it's a hardware issue on one particular port. Didn't resolve it.
  • I've done a factory reset of the R6700v2. Didn't resolve it.
  • I've power cycled the modem (TP Link) and the router. Didn't resolve it.

Netgear support wasn't able to assist without paying a fortune and suggested that I increase the speeds with my ISP which doesn't really make any sense. Appreciate any ideas before I bite the bullet and buy another router.

And you blame the router, not the (unspecified) "a switch" plus the
"7-8 devices" for this problem?

"every single port" of _what_?  The router?  See "And you blame
[...]", above.

If connecting your device-laden (unspecified) "a switch" to the
router causes the problem, then I'd start disconnecting devices from the
switch (followed by the switch itself) to see which of those devices is
disrupting the router's operation.

One obvious thing to try is to reboot the whole network in the right order.

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

  • Turn off and unplug the modem.
  • Turn off the modem router and computers.
  • Plug in the modem and turn it on. Wait 2 minutes.
  • Turn on the modem router and wait 2 minutes.
  • Turn on the computers.

Could be a cable between router and switch went bad? Either that or one of the devices/cables on the switch? Did you change anything on the switch or even move it? I assume the switch is powered.

Disconnected all the devices from the switch and reconnected one at a time.

Interestingly, when I finished reconnecting, the intenet light on the router stayed white.

Appears to have automatically resolved itself.

Thanks for the tips.

Hmmm.  Always less satisfying than identifying a cause, but could be
worse.

I could guess at a few possibilities, but I wouldn't bet much on any
of them.  You might want to stage some artificial power interruptions to
see if you can reproduce the problem.  Or, just wait...
