PIA VPN setup and R7000P / AC2300

I want to put PIA VPN on my R7000P router but cannot with the current installed formware.

The only option is to use the OpenVPD VPN. I am not sure why that is the only option.

I want to reflash the formware with a new firmware that supports adding different VPNs?

Looking into Kong DD-WRT firmware upgrade for the AC2300 / R7000P router.

Any good ideas on the better firmware out there for this Router would be helpful.
