Question about router modems.

Hi! I had a quick question. I have a nighthawk CAX80 two in one router mode, but I also have a arris surfboard sb8200 modem that I don't use since the CAX80 works as both a router and modem. I was curious though, would it be possible to use the cax80 router modem as a router and the Arris surfboard sb8200 as a modem for faster internet speeds? Or would it not make much of a difference? Thank you!

Not unless you can find a WAN/Internet Ethernet port on the CAX80.
If there's no way to connect a different modem to the CAX80, then
there's not much to be done.

Is there anything in the modem specifications for these devices which
suggests that it would matter?  Is one DOCSIS 3.0, while the other is
DOCSIS 3.1, for example?

If you're looking for an experiment to run, then you could try
connecting a computer directly to the SB8200, and compare the results
with the same computer connected directly to the CAX80 in modem-only
mode.  You could, at least, compare the modems that way.

You have posted your message in the section of this community given over to Nighthawk WiFi Routers. (This is easily done, given Netgear's complicated community structure.)

Many questions apply to different types of device, so there may be useful responses here, but modems have different features from plain routers, so you might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your device, in the appropriate section for your hardware. That's probably here:

Cable Modems & Routers - NETGEAR Communities

In the meantime you could visit the support pages:

Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware. Look at the label on the device for the model number.

You may have done this already. I can't tell from your message.

I mention it because Netgear stopped supplying printed manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads.

Re: Question about router modems.

I've got both the SB8200 and the CAX80.

You wont' see any performance improvements from trying to go SB8200---->CAX80 (if you could even get it to work which is doubtful)

Just stick with the CAX80.
