R6400 Wi-Fi speed drops until restarted
My Wi-Fi speed drops sharply until restarted.
Normal rate is about 80-90 mbps but drops to 7 to 15 and remains there.
Restart and it's back to normal for 1-2 hours but that varies.
Additional Information:
Windows 10 system.
My wired speed consistent at about 100 mbps.
Problem consistent on any connected device.
1 computer is connected at a time.
Tried different channels, same problem.
Router has all updates.
Distance from router not a factor.
Relocated router and repositioned antennas.
Thank you,
Joe

Re: R6400 Wi-Fi speed drops until restarted
What actual firmware version is it on?
What modem is it connected to?
have you tried a simple factory reset and reinstall? (don't reinstall from a backup configuration)

Re: R6400 Wi-Fi speed drops until restarted
Firmware Version
V1.0.4.106_10.0.80
I'm using Technicolor Modem DPC 3216
I have done a reset by depressing the reset button on the back and then set it up again.

I did the reset a few days ago and it did not affect the performance.

Re: R6400 Wi-Fi speed drops until restarted
The R6400v2 was the cut off point for routers getting netgear armor. Even to the point where v1 didn't get it due to a slighly slow processor. Maybe yours has issues with that. Try installing version 1.0.3.66 of the firmware to it over a hardwired connection, Then do a factory reset and new install without using a backup configuration. Try that.

Re: R6400 Wi-Fi speed drops until restarted
I appreciate your patience!
Just verified that mine is an R6400v2 not a v1.
I'm not clear which version you're assuming I have.
Did you still want me to install 1.0.3.66 you stated above?

Re: R6400 Wi-Fi speed drops until restarted
yes, try installing 1.0.3.66.
after it installs and reboots, then do a factory reset and new install (don't use a backup). Disable auto-updates and use it for a bit.

Re: R6400 Wi-Fi speed drops until restarted
I'm getting errors when trying to upload the file that I downloaded from the Netgear Download Center.
I went to this page on Netgears website to download the file and read the instructions.
https://kb.netgear.com/000060589/R6400v2-Firmware-Version-1-0-3-66
Then I signed into my router and went into the "Advanced/ Administration /Router Update" to upload it. When I click on Upload it gives me this error:
"192.168.1.1 says Please assign the correct file. The file format is *.chk"
The file I downloaded is a Zip file named: R6400v2-V1.0.3.66_10.0.50
The instructions said to go into Advanced/Administration/Firmware Upgrade. There is no Firmware Upgrade listed under the Admiistration tab. So I went into Router Update as stated above.

If you tell File Explorer not to hide known file types, then it should
show you the ".zip" in that file name.
Did you extract the contents of that zip archive? Like, say, the
".chk" file?
Sadly, Netgear documentation tends to cause less trouble if you
already know what to do.
3. Using the Download Link below, download and extract the new
firmware to a convenient place such as your desktop. [...]
"Download" is one step. "extract" is another.
> [...] The filename after extracting is R6400v2-V1.0.3.66_10.0.50.chk
That's the file you need to send.

_Which_ "The instructions"?

Again, Netgear documentation. "Firmware Update", "Firmware Upgrade",
"Router Update", "Router Upgrade", po-tay-to, po-tah-to...

Re: R6400 Wi-Fi speed drops until restarted
I have installed the R6400v2-V1.0.3.66_10.0.50.chk version. Disabled updates and did the "Reset" per your instructions.
The problem persists.
Maybe this router has a failing component in its circuitry. This problem been ongoing for several years now but this is the first time I have tried to resolve it by seeking professional advice.
If you have any more suggestions I'd be happy to give them a try.
