R6700 cant connect tftp to fix firmware issue

I have a R6700 that I bought over a year ago.  It hasn't been used.  It was interuppted during a firmware update, and I couldn't fix it then (because of time) so I had to go back to ISP provided modem.  It gave amber power light when turned on. by following various directions on here:

I have gotten it into recovery mode (white flashing powerlight) by holding reset and turning it on.

I turned on tftp in windows features.

I downloaded the latest firmware from netgear, and put it on the desktop

I opened up my ethernet and set static IP address 192.168.1.10, subnet 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.1.1

I opened cmd and put in: Desktop>tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put R6700-V1.0.1.48_10.0.46.chk

The response is: Connect request failed

When I ping, I also get no response

C:\Users\****\Desktop>ping 192.168.1.1

Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

I'm stuck and can't seem to get further... I've tried using static ip as 192.168.1.2, I don't know what else to do.

Also, not sure it's relevant, but my computer doesn't have an ethernet port, so I'm using an adapter in USB, (and it's showing up as Ethernet 2 on the control panel)

When I attempt diagnose on the properties screen for the ethernet 2 I get the following error:

"Ethernet 2" Doesn't have a valid IP configuration

Anyway, please help...

Thanks,

Is "Ethernet 2" the interface which you configured with those
parameters shown above?

Re: R6700 cant connect tftp to fix firmware issue

TFTP causes lots of grief. It isn't always straightforward.

If you get stuck, a Google search for something like "unbrick my router" can deliver useful videos.

Does your various moves so far include a "recovery mode" reset?

  • Press reset for 30 seconds
  • Keep pressing reset while removing power
  • Keep pressing reset for another 30 seconds while apply power

Just another user.

Yes, that is what put it in recovery mode, that led to the blinking white light.  I attempted the transfer after that, while it was in this receive mode.

yes, it is.  It is the only ethernet that I have.

Re: R6700 cant connect tftp to fix firmware issue

part of the tftp process is being able to ping 192.168.1.1 from the PC. Are you able to do that? That would verify that the Ethertnet dongle is configured correctly. It sounds to me like the dongle is not working. Follow the tftp instructions to the letter and it should work. It a step is not working like the ping command then come back here with issue.
