R6700 to replace FiOS Actiontec
6 months ago I purchased the R6700 (still unboxed). I have always used router/modems supplied by the ISP (Verizon, now Frontier). I use Apple Airport Extreme in bridge mode and another Extreme as an extender with the very old Actiontec M1424WR. My connection to Internet is ethernet from the wall. I recently cut cable and removed the coax and stream Hulu Live TV. In the past few months the Actiontec now does not want to reset when the power goes out, I then go outside, open the ONT box and reset by pulling the clip and reattaching, not a longterm solution. The tech offered me an an Aris, claiming the Actiontec may be on its last legs. It does not bridge but is a router/modem combo. Does the Nighthawk I purchased a router/modem combo? If the Nighthawk is just a router do I even need a modem if I am connected to the ONT with ethernet? And will the Airport Extremes help in the equation if I can use the Nighthawk? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

No, it is just a router. But with an ONT you don't usually need a modem.

Is it the ONT that is going down or the device attached to it?
Can you reconnect simply by rebooting the FiOS Actiontec box?
If this FiOS Actiontec thing is just a router (hard to tell with no model number) then you can just remove it and use the R6700 instead.
If you visit the support pages:
you can feed in the model number – there are several different hardware versions of the R6700 – and find all the documentation for your hardware.
Check the bit on Connection Mode and look for Always On. That could be an issue on your existing router.
