R6900 - consistently fails speed test, nor passes a true 1 Gbps from my ISP

After upgrading to 1Gbps from Xfinity, we ran speed tests: if the computer is connected directly to the modem, the speeds uproach 1 Gbps, but if connected through R6900, they don't go over 250. Basically, the router makes me loose money, and at this point I might as well have purchase lower speeds and save. But Netgear promisses that R6900 is a gigabit router, so it should be able to pass through a true 1 Gbps from my ISP. Also, QoS and traffic meter are disabled on the router. Any thoughts before I discard the thing and buy from a competitor. Thank you!

Have you done a factory reset on the router? Also, are you on the latest firmware?

Thank you DarrenM. Yes to the latest firmware, no to the factory re-set. According to a very baffled xfinity rep, this particular router simply must pass the signal through without bottlenecking it. I spent days manually configuring it all to my liking and would hate loosing all the settings and having to go through a setup all over again.
